nesguy's Retro Review of the Movies!
The Boondock Saints
Plot: Fraternal twins set out to rid Boston of the evil men operating there while being tracked down by an FBI agent. (stolen from www.imdb.com)
Retrolicious Rating: 5 out of 5 stars *****
Review: The Boondock Saints should be a horrible movie. It should get 1/5 stars, and not a point more. The acting isn't that great, the plot is trite and filled with holes, and no respectable reviewer should give it the time of day. Everything that the media says is wrong about violence in movies this film makes happen. So why the love?
The main characters in The Boondock Saints are what everyone who loves action movies hopes to be, if ever were forced into violence. The movie is one vicarious experience after another; the barfight, outsmarting the cops, excellent marksmanship, etc. Fun and original fights that are impossibly unrealistic only add to the charm. Factor in Willem Dafoe's excellent performance as the FBI agent tracking the brothers down, and you end up with a two hour thrillride filled with surprising laughs and adrenaline pumping action. Many reviews of this film look at its violence and quasi-religious imagery as empty attempts to garnish favor in a sophmoric fanbase. What they are missing is that this movie doesn't need a point; its excess and violence are part of what has fueled an entire generation of American youth in the cinema, and this movie is one of the first to do it with some style.
Couldn't have been better.
Comments
I don't think the general aesthetic of American film-making have changed that much since the 90's, and this movie seems very contemporary to me, in both formal and thematic views.
my Lord, for thee. Power hath
descended forth from thy hand that
our feet may swiftly carry out thy
command. So we shall flow a river
forth to thee and teeming with souls
shall it ever be. E nomini patri, et
Fili e spiritu sancti.
Lol, it's retro from the standpoint that it's an older film that is not currently playing in theaters. Think retro as in "retroactive", or after the fact, not something wannabe-hip teenagers try to purchase for themselves at Hot Topic.
Hahaha... wannabe-hip teenagers.
So, you mean, reviewing a movie which is not currently playing in theater is a retroactive form of reviewing?
And shepherds we shall be. For thee,
my Lord, for thee. Power hath
descended forth from thy hand that
our feet may swiftly carry out thy
command. So we shall flow a river
forth to thee and teeming with souls
shall it ever be. E nomini patri, et
Fili e spiritu sancti.
amen to that!
