I just bought a game & there is some grime on the manual. Does anyone have some suggestions on how I might clean the manual? Or am out of luck on this since its paper? Thanks.
It looks like coffee grounds or chewing tobacco or something similar. I was able to scratch some of it off with my fingernail but I didn't want to scratch any harder. It's a Saturn game manual if that helps.
Getting the chunks off with an edged tool as you did (also try charge cards) was your best bet. A light end o' the t-shirt polishing may be the apex of what you can do with those types of stains.
I've had luck with magic erasers and orange oil on manuals, but it is so easy to screw them up with either, really depends on the paper/printing style too. I would suggest honing your skills on a similar manual of no value.

Some ink will love to leave, other ink will stay; grime is this way too.
Some manuals are happy to be cleaned, others will make you pay.
What is the gunk of which you speak? Motor oil? Boogers? Coffee stain?
Each different gunk takes a different plan of attack.
