Moving a label to a new cartridge

I got a copy of the Russian "Lord of the Rings" Mega Drive homebrew/bootleg that's in a Japanese style cartridge. Instead of modifying my Genesis, I'd rather just swap the motherboard and label to a new US cartridge.

How can I go safely remove the label so that it can be reapplied to a different cartridge? Will a hair dryer work?

  • Just use a game genie and thrn you wont have to worry about it not fitting the slot

Thanks for the tip. In the auction though, it said that this cartridge is incompatible with the Game Genie. Could that be true? I don't have one here or I would try it.
  • You could always unscrew the lid off of your genesis then it would fit. It would be impossible to trasfer that label to an empty shell.
  • I'm 100% sure the label artwork is floating around on the net. Get a blank regular cart and then go to the print shop and have a print label made up for you. I'm sure dra600n or dcdan will have some suggestions as to while labels to get.
  • I would not attempt to remove the label. I think all the suggestions above are worthy. What about a 32X? compatibility issues with that? The slot is a bit larger than the Genesis.

This is a great suggestion, and I will be going that route. This way, I can preserve the original along with my beloved stock Genesis. I haven't found its exact cartridge artwork, so I'll just whip something better up myself in the homebrew spirit.

The current label doesn't seem to have anything to do with LOTR anyways.

Yeah. Definitely ask around. I'm sure that specific label is out there. The label looks like lord of the rings in my opinion with a comic book drawing flair. I am going to knock of the game a bit though as it definitely has nothing to do with LOTR. It's a 1 on 1 fighting game. The hobbits are the size of everybody else. I think somebody out there could make a sweet LOTR beat-em-up, but as a fighter I don't see any real connection to the book/movie series.

The game itself is definitely strange. I would have loved a LOTR beat-em-up as well. Apparently this LOTR is a hack of a pirate of a beat-em-up. That pirate took the beat-em-up and turned it into a fighting game, and they updated the artwork for this version.

  • One more thing, you might want to make sure the holes on the board line us with those on a traditional genesis plastic cartridge. You are also going to need to buy a tool to open up an original genesis cartridge.
  • I just swapped it into a Pac-Man 2 case and its working. Anything is better than PM2, even this weird LOTR monstrosity. Thanks to everyone for their input. I'll post picture when I get the label made.
