Broken Sega CD Model 1 repair interest check

I've seen on a variety of message boards that people come across broken Sega CD model 1s all the time. Between my friend and I, we've had a few of these come into our possession with different problems, and have fixed them with some help from YouTube and some innovation. I'm checking to see the level of interest in this repair service here. Factors in price would include:

1. Parts - so far we have done fuse repairs (Sega CD does not power on) which require about $4 in parts, and a door repair (door will not stay shut) for about $9 in parts (this number will go lower when/if we order in bulk). We are soon going to be piloting a battery "mod" that will allow owners to swap save batteries without any soldering. Potentially, all you would need would be a screwdriver to open the Sega CD and a new CR2032  battery to put in the battery holder. Our fuse fix is similar - you do not need any soldering skills; you just open up the sega cd, pop the old fuse out of the fuseholder, and pop a new one in. Anyway, parts for the battery repair would be about $5 estimated.

2. Labor - I think a flat rate of $20-$25 or so would be fair to cover the time it takes to do the diagnosis, the repair, the proper testing, and any cleaning that may be necessary.

3. Shipping/return shipping - All that would be included in our price would be return shipping, so it would be $11.30 max (price of a medium flat rate).

All of this considered, the repair service would cost about $45 and then whatever it cost the buyer for initial shipping. Would this price be reasonable for interested parties? We can do the same repairs on model 2s.

  • It took me three tries (and about $125) to find me a working Model I Sega CD. I had a Model II, but I felt that the Model I fit more nicely with my matching Genesis Model I (which was my childhood model).

The main problem was the tray issue. The gears inside are very fragile, and can slip out of alignment very easily.

I would recommend if you need to transport it, be sure it remains upright and package it very well. Im not 12 anymore, and i dont abuse or rough my systems.

The one thing i want to share is DO NOT CLOSE THE CD TRAY BY PUSHING IT IN! Press the Start button on the controller. This seems to put extra stress on the internal gear, which could cause them to be damaged or come out of alignment.

I had one that needed the fuse to be replaced. It cost me about $30 in material (90% of which could be used for multiple repairs). Once I got it powered on, again, the tray issue was the main culprit.
  • Electronics major here. Good luck bud(s). I thought I had a problem with my SCD. Turns out it was just 24 years of shit built up on the Genesis extension contacts. ^_^ It was a fun exercise in pulling apart consoles though.
  • I have 2 model 1s. 1 works perfectly, the other has issues. It reads games but has trouble often and is pretty noisy. I don't really know how to go about fixing it :/
  • I shut my dreamcast up by adding some lithium grease to the gears that drive the laser. It's super nice now. Don't think my SCD is that noisy though I haven't hooked it up in a while.
