Fixing old broken contollers?

I've got some old controllers for the NES and Sega Genesis I'd like to fix, but I don't know how.

I have one of those Sega Joystick pads, but down causes up and down to happen in rapid succession while up does nothing.

The Turbo NES pads cause the system and anything connected to 'em to not turn on... I think these ones are kinda dangerous as just plugging it in while it's already on shut off the system immediately.

There's others too, but these I'd like to fix first. Any ideas where I could get information on how to do this? Maybe a place to get it fixed? My local stores don't do it, as I've called them already.

  • Get a phillips screwdriver and open these bad boys up.  More than likely the board inside these things has had food, grime, at whatever else get in there to stop it from working properly.  You can safely bleach the controller, all buttons, and those grey tabs inside.  Just don't bleach the board.  Oh, and you might want to use a little rubbing alcohol but only on the connector parts (these are typically black or grey and you will notice as these are the places the buttons would sync up to).  That should do it.  And after opening it you will typically notice if there is an unfixable problem such as one of the pads
  • I just discovered it wasn't the sega genesis joystick paddle, it was the genesis! The first top left prong in the P1 controller port seems to have been bent down! Can this be fixed? It's a model 1 genesis btw, the bigger one.

Edit: after some bending it seems to be working again, but the prong looks like hell.
  • you may want to try a needle nose plier to straighten it out (these things are so close together though that it will be difficult) ... good thing it's a genesis as you can pick up another one for practically nothing
