SMS combatibility help

So Ive ramped up my SMS collecting and got a bunch of Pal games. I know that 99% of them work but what are the ones that don't work? I keep coming up with references to a list when I search but never actually find a list. Also are there any Brazil games with issues?

  • I saw a "master" list (pun intended) recently about which ones were and were not compatible. If I see it again or remember where I saw it, Ill link it up here. I do know that while the system itself is supposed to be mostly region free, Jap SMS games dont actually fit into an NA SMS.
  • Glitchy/Incompatible on NTSC Master System (PAL only):

Back to the Future Part III

    Battlemaniacs

    Bram Stoker's Dracula

    California Games II

    Cosmic Spacehead

    Desert Strike

    Fantastic Dizzy

    Home Alone

    Micro Machines

    Operation Wolf

    Predator 2

    Quest for the Shaven Yak

    Sensible Soccer

Shadow Dancer - The Secret of Shinobi

    Shadow of the Beast

    Sonic Blast

    Sonic The Hedgehog 2

    Space Harrier (some versions)

    Street Fighter II

    Super Smash TV

    Taito Chase H.Q.

    The Newzealand Story

The Simpsons Bart vs the Space Mutants

Games which are incompatible with SMS1 version 1.3 (i.e. Snail Maze only)

    - 4 Pak all Action

    - Cosmic Spacehead

    - Fantastic Dizzy

    - Micro Machines

    - The Incredible Hulk

    - Street Fighter II

    - Virtua Fighter Animation

    - Japanese Games

However... some of these that are incompatible with an actual SMS will work on a NTSC Genesis with PBC. For instance, I own Shadow Dancer (PAL), Street Fighter 2 (8M Brazil cart), & Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (PAL) and all 3 work fine on my Genesis with PBC. Operation Wolf is listed as not working on a NTSC SMS, yet the ROM on a flash cart will run on a NTSC Genesis.

Barring FM sound from a JP SMS unit, I personally don't see any reason from an operational standpoint to prefer a SMS over a Genesis as far as game compatibility goes. Plus you can get a converter for Genesis to play Mark III & Gam*Boy games, while no such converter exists for a US/UK SMS.
  • Yea the ones I was having a problem with were Street Fighter II and Back to the Future III. Though Sonic 2, Shadow of the Beast, Desert Strike, and Super Smash TV all all seem to work fine on my SMS.

    Thanks for the info
  • yeah sonic 2 works fine for me. I haven't played through it all the way so maybe it's an end of the game thing? It even runs full speed.
