ThrashOmen's endless thread of problems

I used a Shingen The Ruler cart, popped off the PRG chip, burned a 2 meg eprom, soldered it in place, bent up pins 1, 2 ,24, 30, 31, soldered pin 24 to pin 16, soldered pin 2 to hold 24 and soldered pin 30 to hole 1.

I've checked everything out and it seems to be done properly, however, this tutorial shows a slightly different way of putting it together:

Did I do something wrong? It just shows a blank screen, nothing happens with the cart :/

Once again, in advance, thank you to everyone who is about to help me, haha

[Edit] this will be my permanent help thread now! Thanks gorilla!

  • did you remove the header from the binary first before you burned it? Sounds like you did everything right, pics would really help to solve your problem.

I did not do anything to remove the header from the bin... Buuuuuut, I thought that ReadNes3 does that automatically? Also, attached is a photo of the board.

Also, if I did everything right, why is the other tutorial so different?
  • the guide looks different because that guy cut traces to isolate the pins that need to be rewired so they could be left down and rewired on the back of the board. he also installed a socket to make the eprom easily removable.

your work looks generally right. check your connections and make sure you're not getting a short somewhere.

there is no chr-rom for this game but you still have to 'split' the prg file out of the nes rom. so as long as your ran the nes file through some tool and ended up with a different file to program, you should be ok.
  • headers don't matter (or at least in my experience for NES games)

did you scratch any traces etc? READNES3 if done right should have given you two files still, the CHR would have just been blank, but the PRG should have been properly burned. Did you test the rom out before burning and did you test erase the eprom before burning?

Also, if you're going to keep posting about "trouble shooting" your issues, I'd definitely just stick it all in one thread, so it's easy to search and it's all in one place.

  • Well now, I did something just stupid, I used to demiforce translation, however I used the [hM02], which... i don't know what it is... buuuutttt... I do know that it doesn't work.

Well it does pop up in FCEUX with a bunch of garbled graphics and then does nothing. So it was a stupid mistake on my part.

I have two bad habits, I don't test out my donor carts before I take off the chips (very stupid, I know, I always forget) and I don't test out my roms before burning them.

Sooooo when I get home tonight I am going to take off the 3rd ruined 2meg EPROM, and try it a 4th time! Yes I've wasted that many on this game, I have not been this frustrated with this new hobby of mine yet, but I simply need to be a little smarter and careful, I get too proud of my accomplishments and then try to take shortcuts and this time it bit me in the ass!

I will fix tonight and post with results!
  • Well back with an update on the FF2 cart, been busy!

Anyways, the board could not take any more so I tossed it. After desoldering a chip out of the same spot for the 5th time I just had traces and pads going everywhere :/

But alas I have 2 other Shingen carts so I made another one and this one went smoothly and works just fine!

Except for one thing! I used a Demiforce English 1.03 hack with a title screen fix by some other guys, and whenever I put the cart in and turn it on, nothing happens, however, when I push reset, it starts up immediately after I release it, everytime too.

It will do this everytime, it will never boot on the first power on, but if I hit reset, it will. Is don't mind too much, but why is this? Does it have something to do with the save system? (pushing power/reset at the same time)

Aside from that the cart came out nicely and the board is very clean and looks like it was done professionally!
  • Check your /CE, CE, Vcc, etc. pins to make sure the chips are being selected correctly.
  • All of the pins are connected perfectly :/
  • Here are pics btw!
  • So does anyone have any idea what it could possibly be? I've seen one other person say that they've had a similar issue, but no one touched on it. Any thoughts?

3Gen, you said check the /CEm CE and vcc, etc, could you explain what those are and what they do? Also, what COULD be wrong with them?

Like I said, as far as I know, everything is wired perfectly :C
