The Wizard

I'll assume everyone has seen this movie, and I'd just like to say it's the greatest movie about NES of all time. (That's because its the only movie about NES ever made.) Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or comments on the movie.

Comments

  • still never seen it image

  • never seen it either image image
  • I loved that movie when I was a kid.  It was basically a commercial for SMB3.
  • Hardly a masterpiece, but not a bad show. And no, I didn't take my name from the movie image
  • You guys should at the very least watch the clips on youtube, it can be pretty funny and super tacky at times
  • NINNNNNNNNJAAAAAA GAIIIIIIIIIDENNNNNNN!
  • never seen it either.
  • "I love the Power Glove.  It's so bad." - Lucas
  • I've got a vhs copy, watch it from time to time.
  • If you have not seen this movie you must, especialy all of us essentric NES fanatics. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be naming off every single game that is mentioned or shown throughout the movie. I still think that Jimmy's entrance into the video game challenge was one of the greatest entrances in a movie of all time. Although it is a giant commercial for NES, especially the highly anticipated premier of super mario 3 (what a tease) it still leaves you feelin all warm and fuzzy inside at the end. Like I said before, by far the greatest movie about NES of all time.
  • Okay and another thing about this movie: How the fuck did Jimmy's brother and Haley know there was a warp in the game if it was the first time anyone had ever seen SMB3?
  • AH... Someone else finally caught on... when I first saw the movie and Fred Savage is yelling to him get the whistle get the whistle but yet the game was brand new I said to myself what the hell is the whistle he keeps jabbering about. LOL! Glad to see I'm not the only total dork who caught on to that part of the film!
  • Also, why did warping give Jimmy so many points?  YOu don't get points in SMB3 just for warping...
  • What I really find funny is that in almost any movie where there is a video game mentioned, they are always inaccurate as possible about the game. Like in charlies angels when the 2 kids are playing FF8 two players... Another example is on everyone loves raymond when him and the kid are playing dance dance revolution they are just jumping randomly on the mat. But what's funniest of all is this movie is BASED on video games, yet still gets loads of things about them wrong. I'd like to see one movie that mentions a game, and actually cares enough about the game to speak of it correctly. =)
  • The movie was probably wrapped before SMB3 was finished. They set of the movie prob got a playable demo that was rushed. They might have made it as accurate as they could have with what they have, hard to say for sure.

  • ^ Well SMB3 was released in Japan in 1988, so they probably just used the jap version. The funny thing about the inaccuracies is that it's not only video games, it's just that that is what we know and notice. The reality is that EVERYTHING is inaccurate, and that goes for news print and TV too, it's just that most of the time we don't know anything about the subject to begin with so we take what we're told at face value.
  • I could not stand that movie due to the various flaws that really irritated me like you getting points for warping ... LOL.  Anyway, I hated it...but for some reason I was given the movie as a gift at some point.
  • Well they were playing the game competetivly, so chances are, points were given out for progress in the game, say warping ahead three levels like Jimmy did. And at the end everyone winds up scoring some extremly high numbers of points that would be impossible to reach in the short amount of time that they played. So since it was a competition, they probably used a different scoring system to make it more exciting, instead of actual points scored in the game.
  • I had a VHS copy which I transferred to DVD.  NGD & others, I'd be willing to copy that DVD for you and send it, for just the shipping cost.  You can PM me if you'd like.

And now for my Wizard comments.  Some of the memorable scenes that I enjoyed were:
    1) Christian Slater & Beau Bridges playing some Nintendo at the motel room.  It's late, and Slater needs a break, so he goes out to their vehicle, grabs a NES and a box of games and starts playing.  Later, he wakes up to find Beau (whose character had never played Nintendo) frantically using a controller exclaiming "I got the scroll weapon... and I almost beat Mecha Turtle at the end of level 3!"
    Actually, it's right here:

    2) The sabatoge scene in the small town
Fred Savage and Jimmy have run away, so their dad (Beau Bridges) is trying to track them down.  Their mom (divorced from Beau) has hired a detective, who won't get paid unless he finds them first.  They run into each other in this small town, and the detective tries to sabatoge Beau's truck.  There was tire slashing, shovel smashing, and even demolition derby action going on.
    Sabatoge
    Guess it was 2 scenes

    3) The whole scene introducing Lucas
Yes, it probably sold plenty of power gloves.  For me, I just loved the special metal boxes that must have been custom built to hold Lucas's accessories and games.

    4) The game counselor scene
We had read about them in Nintendo Power, and surely some people (myself included) had wanted to become a game counselor at some point.  This was the first time we could see what it was like on the other end of the phone when someone calls a game counselor line.  For the amount of time that it looks like they talked (the counselor looked very tired toward the end), that call had to be somewhere in the realm of $500.

    5) Of course, all the tournament scenes
    Check it out here

With all the extras in that tournament scene, I wonder if anyone has come forth to talk about being in it?
  • Perhaps they weren't even playing a working copy, they had just gotten footage of the game being played and were putting it up on screens via VHS feed.

This makes sense for filming action and doing multiple takes, and also explains the whistle thing. If they had to use the footage they were given, and it contained someone getting the whistle, it would make sense they'd fit it into the dialogue.

NOA was always really tight about new releases, esp their Mario stuff. I don't think they'd let a copy float around a movie set with a simple solution like this.
  • I've never actually seen this movie, go figure. Rizz, I'm gonna send you a PM.
  • Link to Amazon for the DVD, doesn't look there's any special features on the disc
