Reproduction Cardboard Cart Trays

I'm working with UncleTusk to get some new cart trays made up for my future homebrews, and the question came up of would the community be upset with identical reproduction cart trays for the cardboard releases or not. Since I'm not the community, nor the majority, I would like to gain some thoughts from everyone about this.

I personally don't mind exact reproductions of cart trays. It's just a piece of cardboard with no real value, IMO, to the CIB, and I'd like some to replace some of my current ones. Even if they were just red with no writing on them, that would be perfectly fine with me as well.

So what does everyone else think?

Comments

  • I'd do something unique like make them blue to match Airwalk Studios colors. Then it's not really a concern at all. Just don't charge $40+ dollars for them
  • The ones I'm doing for my releases are going to match in some way with the artwork, as well as have Airwalk Studios on them. These are going to be offered to the public, I believe.
  • Yeah, reproducing the cardboard trays doesn't concern me too much. Would they be the vertical ones or the horizontal ones?
  • I forgot which one I sent to Tusk (it was a spare Shining Force 2 box and tray I had), but I want to say it's the horizontal one, but if it's not that, it's the other

  • i'd make them unique somehow. a different color, a logo, or design (not design of box, but a design such as stripes) would be good to distinguish them from the official ones.
  • There should be some differentiating factor. Perhaps a distinguishing mark on an inner flap only seen when you open it up.
  • I personally don't see anything wrong with making all RED inserts. All my inserts have distinguishing features like the Genesis and SEGA logo on the inside, so making some all RED with nothing inside would already set them aside from the real deal.
  • I hate cardboard so i don't care, but i don't see why anybody would be upset with an exact repro of the inner tray. This would be absolutely pathetic if soebody was upset about it. Think about it. If the inner tray is damaged on originals then 99.5% of the time the outer sleeve is as well. Putting a new tray would not make it look in any better condition because crushing would still be evident. The whole issue with this stuff is and should be about the morality of trying to fool somebody. If the sleeve for your games is for a gae you made with completely original artwork them the liscensed by sega emblem should make no difference. Any idiot can look up a complete list of genesis games and see it was not an offianl sega game. Hell, i se repros of actual covers on ebay all the time and ebay isn't stopping the. Sega isn't coming after them. It seems completely moral to make exact replicas of the inner tray if that's what you want to do. Personally, i think you can come up with something cooler, but it's your decision.
  • Thanks for the responses everyone!

This.  Or your logo, just something subtle a collector can notice without having it in hand to see it.

as long as they are poorly drawn and 1950's rocket shaped.
  • I voted for exact replicas ... the fact that everyone is so concerned about all the legitimacy of everything in the gaming world is a sad state. Its, for all purposes, a piece of damned cardboard.

Done and done.  It might as well just be scratch and sniff too.   Thoughts?

  • The distinguishing factor on CB genny games is the cover art, the inner trays on a lot of the games have already been swapped and most people have no idea. I see no problem with an exact repro or an all red repro.

While your at it figure out how to make exact repros for Saturn / Sega CD games, Segas other shitty game case (or just the front piece)

    I'll take 100!

I voted for the first option.
  • Stamp the top and bottom. They won't show when displayed on a shelf and are distinguishable from the real thing.

These trays are part of the total aesthetic of a sega game, whereas the snes inner tray cannot be seen and serves no other purpose than to keep in the game from rattling around.  I just don't see how somebody in his collecting centric hobby would want a reproduction of something that really isn't THAT hard at acquiring.

Like you, I don't really care either way as I don't planning on buying any.  I do wish him the best of luck with whatever he decides to go with, though.

  • Leaving it red for Genesis or yellow for 32X don't seem to be a problem for me. Just be sure to put a small "reproduction" somewhere so people won't complain too much about it.
  • Just do it! nike signs!
