Nes to sega end mod?

I have a yobo famiclone that plays famicon games.  I'm wanting to use an nes controller on the system but the one I have has the same plug in connector as a sega controller.  Could I cut the end of the nes controller and sega controller and splice them together and it work?

  • Original Sega and NES controllers use opposite approach for data transfer, parallel vs. serial. So it is not possible to use one controller on other system. But it is possible to make a converter that would not require any modifications in controllers or consoles, or, which is easier, but destructive, mod a controller (swap chips).
  • It uses the DB9 (sega, atari, etc) plug because it is cheap chinese junk Still has the same serial controller protocol so you need to find the pinout and make an adapter. Use a NES extension cable so you don't cut up an original controller!
  • This guy here has a cool mod:

  • Guess I'm out of luck as I have never salder'd anything so that sux lol.

This converter would it be like 1 end would be the sega end for the system and the other end be a connector that I can hook any nes controller into?  Or am I misunderstanding?
  • You can make a passive connector (just sockets and wires) for any NES, Famicom, and Famiclones controllers - they only different in pinouts, but has the same serial interface with 5 wires and the same data protocol.

To make any kind of NES to Sega (or, in general, an Atari-compatible) controller converter, it has to be active, i.e. contain ICs, either discrete logic, or, these days, a MCU. You can even use an Arduino to make such converter.
  • yea this is over my head cause that didn't make any sense to me lol
