What's the BEST Sega Genesis System/Mod? Poll Inside!! ^-^

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking to get the best Sega Genesis experiance there is humanly possible.

Here's my current options, let me know what setup you would chose for yourself, or pencil in a better option.

I like the Idea of a Genesis 1 with a Sega CD 1 attachment, looks awesome

But I also have a Genesis 2 with a Sega CD 2 attachement, Looks ok. not as awesomes the 1 generations.

I have a few Geneis Model 2's as well as a few Model 1's

Of the Model 1's I have

2X That say High Definition Graphics

and

1 X VA7 Model

On the Genesis 2's

I appear to have all the motherboard revisions

I'm not determined to keep the system I chose stock, I intend to add a RCA/S-Video out to what ever system I choose, and in the case of a Geneis VA 7 or a Genesis 2, I'll be adding  the Crystal Clear Audio Mod.

My hopes is to end up with the BEST Video and Audio possible.

Right now I'm thinking that can be done with the VA7+Svideo+CCA mod's

But let me know what you think.

Thanks everyone!!

~John

  • I picked the CDX straight up. It has better picture than the model 1's and most model 2's. I feel the sound difference is negligible between the model 1's and the CDX with a number of model 2's being like nails on a chalk board. However, that model 1 VA7 is the worst system you could possibly have for sound so avoid it like the plague. It has all the worst parts of a model 1 and model 2 combined in a single crap system. That would be the worst option. If you are determined to do a mod The HDG model 1 with s-video would be pretty nice as would the CCA model 2. What you have to consider is what you want. If you want a combo system with the CD, go with the model 1. If you want a no nonsense genesis, go with the model 2 but make sure your board revision for that has a great picture. Other than that, I would just get a SCART to YUV or SCART to HDMI converter and use the CDX. It's the best option and no modding required plus you can use the converter with multiple systems if you just buy the extra SCART cables.
  • I thought I read someplace that the VA7 has a better picture than the other model 1's, I figured that with the combo of the CCA mod would make the audio much better, and make it a great audio and video Genesis.
  • I use my JVC X'Eye. I did a region mod on the cart portion and hid the tiny switch in the CD tray maintaining the stock look. I also put in a bi-color power LED to indicate which region is selected. One of the nice things is that the cart slot is oversized so there is no issue with using Japanese carts like there is with the Genesis models.

The banding issue was fixed in the later models, but if I remember correctly the picture is washed out compared to the other model 1's somebody correct me if I'm wrong as I might very well be. I agree with Jimmy that the X'eye is the perfect system for a mod. There is a ton of room in there to so a lot of neat stuff. The s-video mod is extremely easy from what I've heard and you could neptunize it with keeping it stock looking. That would be one hella-system.
  • I've been using the CDX and 32x for all my gaming for a while now and have never had any complaints about the quality of the picture or audio. I did try to use it with a SCART to HDMI adapter once and the picture was vibrant and sharp, but too much for my liking. These games were made such that you aren't really supposed to see the pixels.

If / when it dies, I will probably snag an X-Eye. They are much much easier to work on and repair, and I don't have the space issues I used to.
  • Sound like the xeye is a good system. I may have to buckle down and finish fixing mine. Only issue I have woth the xeye is the 32x blocks the cd lid. Making it hard to swap discs for night trap and farenhieght (cd 32x versions)

That's why I say neptunize it! Then you won't have that issue!
  • I prefer composite to s-video mainly because it is more versatile due to more TV's have them than s-video. Sure s-video is great but you have to ensure you have a TV that has one and when it breaks find another that has it.
  • My best option and current GEN setup is Model 1 HDG with S-video. Second place would be emulation. I would have picked CDX because I love the size convenience but I don't own one. For me, even just composite is a huge upgrade because I grew up on RF.
  • I have a really sweet Model 1 that is Non HDG but is a VA6 and it performs beautifully. I currently use it with S-Video and it looks sharp!
  • Just go with scart and a converter its better than s video and no modding.
  • I think I may do the scart someday with the CDX, for now, since I like to tinker, im gonna do the VA7 CCAM and compare it to my Hi Def Genesis and see what has the better sound (as far as my ears can tell and my setup allows) I'm curious to see... well... hear

Sometime this week, I hope to have made some progress bringing back my xeye from the dead... here's hoping the chip transplant works and that my solder skill level is enough
