Outrider's Midwestern Collecting Adventures

Figured I'd start my own vanity scavenging thread. YOU'RE ALL DOING IT. I'll also post funny stories about the characters that I interact with along the way.

Today I hit a flea market .There was a thickly accented romanian? guy today and his beautiful daughter. They had an NES and 3-4 games all of which I had save for Abadox, so I ask the girl what she wants for it. She asks "Papa" and he tells her $7. Knowing full well the game is worth no more than $5 I start to walk away. At which point every immigrant vendor will stop you and go down even more, which they did and offered it to me at $4. I have nothing to lose and not much to gain here so I get hard and offer $3 and hold up 3 fingers. "Papa" then waves me off and tells me to "go look them up, they're worth money". I get home and abadox is worth exactly three dollars, go figure!

Anyway here's what I got from my regular guy:

Got them all for 20. This is why I don't waste my time arguing with people over $3 games at other tables.

I like how the case for Rolo is fatter than normal (because he's an elephant).

  • Outrider, if I am not mistaken, all electronic arts cases are fatter. Look at Road rash, Haunting, the Immortal, Etc.
  • Yeah you're right, I just assumed it was unique to this game. Durr.
  • It just makes sense that an elephant game would have a fat case doesn't it?
  • I wasn't sure if you already knew about the EA stuff and was just making a joke, which I thought was funny!

For this EA Game it should just be known that the case is bigger because the main character is an elephant!

I would think it would be a hippo game that would have it.
  • Little craigslist score today.

Got it all for $20. I wanted the mouse to play Troddlers moreso than Mario Paint. Super Ghouls!

My cat likes to sit in the frame.
  • Just discovered that the knobs for these joysticks are interchangable. Including the NES Advantage.

  • Wandered into a "game shop" earlier while waiting for someone only to discover it was a tabletop game shop. But the guy gave me a tip that the local play n trade was going out of business and is selling games buy two get one free etc. So I headed there after work and bought these:

Crystalis was a little overpriced but I talked the guy into giving it to me free with the purchase of some of the other games. I'm not totally sure how it all worked out but I saved like 30%. I usually like to do better than that but oh well. I actually want to play most of these. Bo Jackson baseball was recommended in another thread.
  • No pictures of creepy weirdos...
  • I'm honestly afraid to take pictures of them.
  • Found some ok things at the flea market today. Happy to have Baseball Stars. The flea market gets really crowded and intense this time of year. I actually prefer the colder months as the cold scares most shoppers away.

  • Whoever made the label art for Trampoline Terror was really phoning it in that day.

"This label is totally void of artwork, should I at least add some color? Eh, why bother."
  • Thats the first thing I thought, what a crappy label. At least colour it in.
  • Chatted with a goodwill employee yesterday when I saw super mario land in their games bin. The guy relented about how he would have bought the game if he knew it was in there. And was of course: a video game collector! And would you believe he nabs everything that comes in that he doesnt have?

Needless to say I told the manager that he sexually harassed me and got him fired.

j/k but seriously, is there anyone who DOESN'T collect video games right now? No wonder their game bin is never anything but sports games for genesis.
  • I've heard so many theories about Goodwill and their selling practices, I don't know what to believe. You'll see a lot of posts from folks who never find anything, and then you'll see others who find ridiculous stuff. The ones near me have only the hottest of garbage, although I occasionally find small stuff, like a sealed Looney Tunes PS1 cart racer for $3 - wtf?

Also, Trampoline Terror has the saddest-ass label of all time.
  • The goodwill games pricing system goes like this:

    Employee doesn't recognize the game = $3

Mario and/or pikachu is on the cover = $6

Though of course sometimes stuff just seems to be priced completely at random. I just drag myself in the goodwill any time i drive by one, check the areas they put game stuff in, and leave.
  • Not really a video game item but I finally found one of those RCA switchbox things today so I can stop plugging and unplugging wires on my TV when I want to play different consoles. Got it for $2 at a garage sale.

Nice find! I just paid $30 for one of them!

  • Got to the flea market late today because I had to give a friend a ride to work. But it didn't hurt my results any. Monster Truck Rally is another uncommon game and I was happy to score it, I have Rollerblade Racer already but it's uncommon and this one was $3 so I picked it up. I'll probably sell that whenever I get set up to do so here. Kickmaster is worth more than I paid for the lot

  • Combined garage sales and flea market weekend money wastin' haul. Some of these came from an advertised garage sale, the guy claimed an NES and "lots" of games would be for sale. So I show up early only to find out someone came to his house last night and bought all of it for $100, Is this really what we've come to?

My consolation was SM64 and Goldeneye, plus Kirby 2 and a like-new n64 pad for giveaway prices ($3 each, he even went down a little because I think he felt bad about my semi-wasted trip.)

My collector friend at the flea market also missed Wacky Races by about 30 seconds. Whoever it was only paid five dollars. Lots of broken dreams this weekend.

  • Nailed these today. I've been waiting a long time to find Castlevania: Bloodlines in the wild so I could avoid the high retail price. I got these cheap and even better all three of them are really fun to play.

  • is that a dinosaur with a gun? that's so badass
  • My greatest score ever. Challenge of The Dragon by ColorDreams is a level 8 "very rare" rated game here on the site. That's the first game for me to break 6-uncommon. I am very, very, very happy today. That's not even mentioning all the other stuff in this lot, of which there are a few nice things as well.

  • black label too boot on the challenge of the dragon, very nice. you find it at a flea market or garage sale?

  • Found it on craigslist.
  • Some better pics of Challenge of The Dragon.

  • Did pretty well at the flea market this morn:

  • I cant find any N64 games in the wild anymore, thats why I only have one lol
  • Nothing amazingly rare today but lots of fun games. If your day doesn't turn up any gems just shoot for playability, that's what I say.

Oh I finally snagged a cheap expansion pak, ten bucks!. Got another six-button for change too. I already had two but one of them was a little bit off. I made sure this one said "Made In Japan" on the back because the chinese made controllers I've had were almost all problematic.

  • Big Genesis lot today. And one little Nintendo game. Really happy to find Streets of Rage 2 & 3 and Sunset Riders. Sorry Nintendo people!

Anyone ever see the "Power Grip" batman wings for the NES controller before? I think they're pretty cool. Kind of makes it shaped like Model 1 Genesis controller.

(Genesis is a great system and you should collect for it.)
