Looking for guidance collecting on the Sega Master System and Game Gear

So, I have been collecting for years and years now, i'm really happy with how much progress i've made, but i'm starting to dip into territory that is unfamiliar and not very well documented.. Here is my situation. I only collect US releases, this is done as a means to control my buying habits so I don't go insane and bleed out money wise, it also means at times, I have limited options or end up spending more. With that said, I have managed to stay true to my theme, but now I am running into odd issues.

I am currently seeking a nice master system, I have a few games for it, I also own a game gear with one game. I am planning to embark on my mission to collect on these 2 platforms, but I am trying to find a list of all the US releases for both systems, as well as some resources that could talk about if those games are good, what the best were, and if they are ports, original games, that kind of thing.

Both of these systems seem to have limited fandom, but the fandom that is there focuses a lot on the import elements especially for the MS for obvious reasons. Can anyone help someone like myself out to get guidance, suggestions, etc? I started my Sega love at the Genesis but, i'd love to get into these systems as well, just need to stay concentrated on the US stuff.

  • The database on this site has the most up to date USA game gear set listing anywhere on the Internet period. It's my master list tweaked over many many years of collecting and imported for all to use here by Dain. It has all variants for USA set and should help you immensely.

Good luck on your new quest!
  • I just started a new NTSC master system list on here so if you have any questions, can hit me up on it.
  • just use the database here. as for what games are good, that is all subjective.

just make sure you don't get a master system 2 since you'll be leaving out the option for the sega card games. Even though there is only 7 (or 6) you can't play them on the SMS2 and some of them are quite fun.

best thing the SMS is quite easy and still very cheap to collect for though finding items in the wild can be next to impossible unless you want just loose carts.
  • I currently have the model 1 but, it's very cosmetically screwy so i'm trying to find an in box one. Is there a maybe list of top 10/20/50/whatever games for that system?

Also any help on game gear would be amazing, i'm very excited to dive into these but it's also really hard to know what's good since I never owned them as a kid (aside a game gear with a few sonic titles but that was it)
  • With SMS just remember that when your buying CIB games, if the manual is horizontal rather then vertical its PAL. Obviously there are a FCKTON of games that were never released in the USA. SMS isnt region locked so it doesnt matter but if you are seeking US releases for the ones that did come out here, thats a good tip
  • one exception to the manual orientation is Sonic the Hedgehog. it is horizontal for the US release because it is just the euro release sent to the USA.

Few good SMS games IMO are:

    Govellius

    Golden Ax Warrior

    My Hero

    Micky mouse: Castle of Illusion

    Zillion

    Panama Joe

    Aztec Adventure

    Penguin Land

    Sonic

    Wonderboy games

problably some others that I like that I am forgetting. Sad bit is, the games that I really like are some of the more expensive.
  • Golden axe warrior is a fantastic game. Its a Zelda clone that ends up better than Zelda itself. Phantasy star is the single best 8 bit RPG period. R-type is the best shmup series out there. Rocky is a fun boxing game with a music in between rounds that you will remember for the rest of your life! Miracle warriors is one of the most unique RPG style games that has not been done again. Also - "one exception to the manual orientation is Sonic the Hedgehog. it is horizontal for the US release because it is just the euro release." Fixed that for you.
  • on the topic of miracle warrior, if you are interested in CIB games only make sure it comes with the map!
  • SMS2 cut video quality the most. RGB all the way down to lowly RF.

JP real carts are de facto region locked, no pin adapter yet.
