True, it is highly corrosive. But I don't think the 15% blend that most people use is doing all that much damage.
The bigger irritant to me is the blatant waste of producing the stuff in the first place. Some corn farmers basically get a rim job from Congress while everybody else pays for the spectacle.
The upside, is with oil sliding so precipitously, Brazil's "energy independence" is being exposed as a sham, and hopefully people will realize that ethonal was, and always will be an absolutely stupid fucking idea.
I CAN blame them for choosing one that is such an obvious flop. Lots of credible scientists/engineers did the math and explained that this is a terrible option because of the large amount of energy expended during the process, but corn farmers got their way.
Brazil has been using Alcohol in several forms (E85 and what not) for almost 30 years... Strange that it haven't picked up around here until a few years ago.
Brazil did that by raping thousands of square miles of rain forest, and it still only accounts for a very small portion of their total fuel usage. The vast majority of their needs are still met by oil.
Advocates push the stuff as an alternative fuel, but the fact is replacing 3% of gasoline in the USA with the stuff has used up something like 50% of our corn. Additionally, the amount of gas you use to get gallon of ethanol is a ridiculous proposition.
The stuff is orders of magnitude worse for the environment than just having used the gasoline as fuel in the first place.
Ethanol practically defines the term "boondoggle".
Sorry for the rant, but this issue is a shining example of law makers being blind to hard science that proves them wrong. As an engineer I am very frustrated by their inability to see completely avoidable and easily predictable issues like what ethanol has caused (more than doubling corn/feed prices, etc).
I saw it for 2.95 around madison today, most are still between 2.97 and 2.99
some old bag was arguing with me the other day asking if gas went up, I said no, its actually gone down about 50 cents the past few weeks, to which she replied "No it hasn't, it was cheaper on the other side of town (the west side of madison)", which is complete bullshit because gas is always more expensive on the west side
true true. but I live in Buffalo, which I guess last week on the radio I heard was paying the most for gas in the country for some reason? don't know if thats 100% true or not but yeah im happy its going down
Down to $2.39-ish around here, though there are rumors of prices in the lower $2.30s. About 60 miles away in Winchester, TN, gas is as low as $1.98. Some places in south Texas are down to $1.88... Still dropping daily. And I'm still running on Sept. 11th's fill-up...
^^^ Ah, the glory days! Yup, I remember filling the tank for $8 consistently.
Yup, thats when I used to smoke pot. We couldn't do it at home, because we still lived with outr parents. We would go for "high rides". We'd scrounge together a few quarters and be able to drive for hours!
