Anyone here do Game Gear repairs?

Hey all. Just bought a ton of awesome Game Gear games, and, of course, my console just decided to break. I'm getting that weird screen problem where you have to turn it to an odd angle to see the screen and it keeps flickering when I am able to see it.

Honestly, I'd like to just get the thing repaired since I'm sure a new fixed one would cost about the same.

Anyone here do repairs? I'd just like to get the caps re-done so the screen isn't as bad.

  • funny, one of mine took a dump today also (so I have 2 broken ones now)

check with any local game stores you have (not big box stores like game stop) as many of them do repairs in house. I know two places near me do repairs like this and it isn't badly priced.
  • Unfortunately I don't have any ability in repairing Game Gear capacitors, but I had a second GG that had blown capacitors. It's a temporary fix but I do know a way to improve its condition. Until you can get it repaired or get a replaced one, let the system warm up by turning it on and leaving it for 10-15 minutes. Obviously, if you don't have AC adaptor I wouldn't bother trying this. When I did this, it brightened my screen and fixed the sound on my damaged GG. You'll need to do this every time though if it's not fixed however...

  • I've been looking for years, to do game gear mods (Tv out, ext controller, backlight), but no one came forward.

I guess even though these hings were prone to have certain things go wrong with them it's not one of the SEGA systems that is most collected and thus not high enough demand. If the things that usually go wrong with the Game Gear went wrong with the Game Boy it would be another story. Although if that was the case maybe the Game Boy wouldn't have been as popular as it was and is. I remember I got myself a Game Gear many years after it came out and it broke fairly quickly, it put me off it at the time and never got back into it.
  • I found this article some time ago about doing a GG to TV modification, if anyone has the skill to attempt it here's the link that tells you how:

  • Yeah. I know you can buy the boards already made, and just have to solder it to the Game Gear, but I don't have any experience with soldering at all. lol

Edit: I am on Nintendo age, I'm new here but have been a part of NA for a while. Not just some random guy
  • I'm also looking for someone to do the TV mod and the controller mod to play the Game Gear just as it was a console.
