To be frank, the only idea I fully agree with is the first (subforums for each different section). Each other idea I disagree with, in part or in whole (what follows after this sentence is in no regular order). Admins should definitely be able to read PMs (in order to help resolve trade disputes, etc.). Also, mods and admins should have their own forum for communications purposes. As an admin of a certain other video game forum, I can testify to the ease with which a mod or an admin can get in touch with the rest of the staff (should the need arise) by using a separate and private forum. As it stands presently, I think we have exactly enough mods here, with 24-hour coverage of the forums. My reasoning falls in line with that of Jumpman's as far as deleting user accounts is concerned. Accounts that haven't been used (i.e. registered, but hasn't logged in for 2-3 years or since the date of registration or within a week thereafter, or said "to heck with this place") should be deleted after a significant while. Also, spam accounts should be deleted. But say I was to take a break for a year or two... If I take a break, I'll almost certainly return, but if I were to return to find my account deleted, I'd definitely have some problems, heh .
Edit: One final note, regarding post counts and such...about the only one I could figure that wouldn't need displayed is NGD's...we know he's a post whore already, and that the counter ran out of zeros...it's the real reason Dain needed more server RAM .
(OK...that was a joke, heh heh...I need to go to sleep now .)
I want to first say that I understand what you're trying to get at Nick, but I don't think constricting things will do much other than hurt us in the long run. I also want to say that by making this post shows that you actually care about NA, and I really appreciate that. I hope you take my comments below with a grain of salt as some of them are rhetorical and not directly intended for you.
#1. Not now, but perhaps in the future we'll create sub-forums. We really aren't large enough yet and segregating our population only diminishes the idea of "community".
#2. I purged inactive accounts once before, and here's what I learned:
Many of the users that we deleted were active e-zine readers, not forums posters. Unfortunately, we pissed off a good number of people last time.
The good news is that the development/next version of NA better tracks the users last visit date (ie, when they download the e-zine as well). This will help us better determine which accounts have been completely abandoned after a few months of inactivity.
Some newer accounts are "bot" accounts with bogus data. To fight this, we've enacted Captcha (text images) in the new version of NA.
I do believe that having a "trimmed" user base of only the active users is a good idea, if nothing more than for better security.
#3. You wouldn't want to invite a pedaphile to your kid's birthday party, right? I think common sense should always take place before you invite anyone anywhere.
#4. Why on Earth would we make the moderator section public? No offense, but this isn't really a democracy where entitlement has some validity. Trust me when I say this area is being _constructively_ used to make the forums, and NA, a better place. It's not a gossip area.
#5. I was actually hoping to increase the number of moderators soon by 2, since we have one that might be leaving us soon (getting out of collecting).
#6. Moderators cannot read PMs. No one can read PMs except for me, and I have only done so in urgent circumstances. It is a privilege that I don't take lightly. Here are some of the reasons I view PMs:
- I'm alerted to a possible scam
- to resolve major conflicts
- to prevent shilling on forum auctions
With an average of 1,000 PMs being created each day, I sure as heck don't have time to read them and, frankly, I have better things to do. The only time I read them is when I'm alerted to a situation that requires me to do so. In not trying to sound offensive, I could really care less about your private matters that don't concern me or the well being of the site.
#7. Closing registration isn't a simple task anymore, short of turning off the site. NA is much more than just a forum and all of the site is integrated. A lot of people that join NA are here for trading, reading the ezine, blogging and reading the forums (but not posting). And that's perfectly fine. Closing the site would only hurt us, IMO.
#8. I could go either way on this one. Personally, I could care less about the number of posts someone makes. I'd rather see 100 quality posts than 1000 worthless posts. People that we feel are intentionally spamming up their post count will have a permanent post count of 0 and will forever be Cherubs! Oh the pain!
I'm quoting this again, just so people know. At present, the only person who can read PMs is me. Please see my notes in a previous post regarding this.
Interesting discussion. I voted yes to the subforums and post count ones, but really I could go either way on them. The rest I pretty heavily disagree with. It seems like a number of people (more than just Nick) seem to be having a bit of a panic about the growth and/or trader problems on NA. And on the PM thing, I guess I always assumed that Admins and Mods could read PM's. I was a little surprised that's not the case here with the exception of Dain. I guess I just don't understand what's leading to all this "We need changes" talk. Why is a lot of newer users a bad thing, why is having 10 mods or 50 mods a bad thing, why is Dain and potentially others being able to read PM's a bad thing (the interwebs isn't exactly private property), and why is having a lot of inactive users a bad thing outside of a maintainence standpoint?
Could someone please give me a clear explanation as to why these issues are much of a concern?
Edit: I've never been part of a forum that DIDN'T have a Moderator-only forum. This shouldn't be an issue at all. If you want to be part of the "secret-society", become the most active, well-respected and responsible member of the community. I'm sure they'll welcome you with open arms.
I'm quoting this again, just so people know. At present, the only person who can read PMs is me. Please see my notes in a previous post regarding this.

#1 Okay.
#2 If you purged accounts before and it pissed some people off, then perhaps you could find a better way to only delete the accounts that are truly inactive. Obviously you would not want to delete accounts for people that only lurk the forums, nor would you want to delete accounts of people who only read the eZine. Though, I do think it is quite silly to have so many inactive registered accounts.
#3 Yeah true. Just don't advertise this place to the teeny boppers at GameFAQs or Nintendo.com. Glad you agree.
#4 Because I believe that all users should be treated 100% equally and I don't like that you have your own separate section. I also believe that it makes certain moderators feel empowered (weather they'll ever admit it or not) that they have their own little section and they act like they are more important than other users.
#5 Less is more! If you do get new moderators, don't distinguish them any differently than the other users (ie: no moderator icon). EVERYBODY SHOULD BE EQUAL
#6 Ya I know that only admins have the privilege. I said moderators, but I meant administrators. You should just say that nobody whatsoever has this privilege, but secretly you do and ONLY you. Or hell, say that you removed this privilege all together and then secretly give the privilege to Dangevin and NGD. Ignorance is bliss. I'd be happy.
#7 By no means was I saying to close the site permanently. Hell no. I was just saying to close it until the site is prepared for more users. Currently I don't believe this site is really ready for more users, though everybody else seems to disagree.
#8 I could also care less about how many posts a user has. Look at NGD. He has like 9000 posts. How many of them are quality posts? Not that many. I used to post all the freaking time but it was just me dicking around saying nothing at all. Part of the reason I did it was the up my post count. I try not to make useless posts anymore. Often times people make posts saying "PM sent" or just agreeing or saying stupid shit with sole intention of upping their post counts. If you removed the amount of post counts that a user has, I think it would actually be beneficial. Also, I don't like your post count being used by newer members to judge a member's reputation. If I have 3000 posts, then I obviously am more reputable than a user with 500 posts right? RIGHT?? Wrong. Post count means jack shit in my opinion, but it does influence the way people think and post. EVERYBODY SHOULD BE EQUAL

I think it does carry some weight for information, but not at the level you are saying. Its more to see who is new and not yet known if they know what they are talking about. 500 vs 3000 may not matter but 5 vs 300 would. The feedback hopefully shows trust but the post count also helps show how long a person has been around and might have better replies to questions.
#1 I don't really think there are that many topics to have to sift through, honestly, wouldn't a bunch of sub-forums just be more clutter (for the justification of saving 30 seconds in your forum browsing?).
#2 How are they annoying? I mean, unless I'm missing something, 1,000 inactive accounts aren't doing anything counter-productive, other than grabbing some server space. Delete them, leave them, is it really that big of an issue?
#3 I haven't invited anyone here, but that's probably due to me not having any friends that collect NES stuff. I don't think anyone would invite someone they thought would be nothing but trouble, so it seems like #3 is more common sense anyway.
#4 I disagree with you here, it's not my business at all what any moderator is saying. I'm sure they're just doing their jobs, but even if they're making horrendous fun of me/you/buk fitty, I don't think it's important. It isn't anyone's "right" to see every board here, I figure when you sign up somewhere you accept the rules of the land. This land has a mods board, and that's fine. I don't see the harm.
#5 What's the harm again? Having more than enough people to keep the place straight doesn't seem like a bad thing. And from my (brief) experiences, I don't really think any of them are rubbing your, or anyone else's faces in their massive internet moderator powers. They all do a fine job.
#6 Don't have a problem here either, if you want a private message to someone, send an email or an instant message, don't put it in the private messages. Dain already explained how little that ability is used anyway. It's probably better that he can do that, if only to help resolve conflicts/catch scammers/ect.
#7 That comes off as somewhat elitist, don't you think? Why would you shut the doors to the place? I joined to read the ezine, found the forums, and have enjoyed every minute of this place. Why deprive someone else of that because your bothered the mods have their own board?
#8 Who cares? At all? I can't imagine post counts are any sort of a problem.
I think all of what Nick is saying is it takes one bad apple to spoil the barrel.
Perhaps what eventually happened at DP was an elitist feeling among some mods, and that eventually crept out of the mod board and into the forums. Either when it was visible for a day and people saw some nasty things, or just when people got used to talking a certain way in private and started doing it publicly.
I tend to agree with this sentiment, it has happened elsewhere and potentially could happen here. But it's not happening now. Taking drastic preventative measures for something that isn't a problem and won't be for any foreseeable future seems to be unnecessary.
There's a middle ground. And I believe, that so long as Dain is actively interested in administrating his forums, he won't let his own mods get "catty" and abusive. He shares your vision of NA, and he's "hired" mods that will be good ambassadors of that vision.
I think the answer is to eliminate mods that don't share that vision, rather than hobble all of them that are fighting the good fight.

I take pretty damn big offense to this. Sure I post a lot and dick around, but isn't that part of the fun of the forums? I didn't realize this was a strictly informational board where you can't have fun. I think I have done quite a damn bit for the NES community as a whole and to say that "not than many" of my posts are quality quite frankly pisses me off. That is doing nothing but slapping me in the face and pretty much saying I may as well not be on the site.
Does post count really count for reputation at all no, but the more you post the more people get a sense of whether or not they can trust you on the site by judging your personality. This hobby is entirely about respect IMO and treating your fellow collectors well. Some people are more respected than others, but that is usually based on the amount of time and energy they put into the hobby. Respect is something you have to earn, in life and on the boards. ~~NGD
Just so everybody knows... I am actually a mod at DP as well, and if anybody has any problems/inquiries/questions with the forums there, feel free to pm me and I'll try to help you out as much as I can (just as Tusk)
I am pretty new to this site and new to NES collecting and if it were not for justabum inviting me here i would have not been able to build up my collection and my interest in collecting.I agree with frisbees point that anybody should be able to come on to this site evan if they just want to collect and not post that much.As for there being to many mods,i have to disagree because there has to be people on this site that maintain what is going on here,as the site grows there will have to be more mods.I am not that knowledgable about NES as of yet,and i dont post to much good information ,but i ask questions about things i have no idea about.I get knowledge watching other peoples posts and ask questions if i dont understand what they are saying, and for that i am thankful.
Well I think Jumpman is a girl lol. I agree with Jason I joined to talk about nes and have fun if I want to read all serious posts Ill join a library forum. Anyway just about everyone with high post counts joined from the start. The first 4 months it was basically just a handful of us making all the posts. Oh and did I mention Wills a girl. lol.

Well put NGD! I don't think anyone posts so called "quality posts" 100% of the time. What defines a quality post anyway?! NA is a forum - it is to chat and have fun, and carry on discussions about the hobby, as well as disscus other topics that are of interest. I think everyone has the right to state whats on their mind, as long as it isnt targeting another member. NGD has done so much for this community, and all 9000 of those posts are quality in my opinion!
Also, a post count doesn't create inequality, if tsomeone wants a higher post count, then they can contribute more. Also, I personally can care less what somones post count is as it doesnt say anything about the member. Just being here, contributing, and having fun is all that matters!

only time I read them is when I'm alerted to a situation that requires
me to do so. In not trying to sound offensive, I could really care less
about your private matters that don't concern me or the well being of
the site.

(many many things)
That was a fun read:

Lol, I don't even know where that came from...
Probably had something to do with me being able to dead lift more than you.

or it could be that wrldstrman has found himself a bit of a man crush on you and in order to justify it, has determined that you must be a girl
