newbie- other region Master System games

I have a Sega Master System 2 that is NTSC. I'm finding that some games in the US are much more expensive that PAL counterparts. Will I have any issues playing pal games? I've read about boxing and slow down going ntsc>pal but not much about going pal>ntsc.

Would I be better off trying to find Japanese games? They'd be NTSC but will probably be in Japanese language as well. I don't know if the prices are as good though. Basically I'm looking for economy games (PAL wise anyway) like Sonic the Hedgehog. It costs 10 to 100 times more in the US.

  • i think the SMS is region free and PAL games can be played on NTSC system.

Which games are you looking at btw? for the most part, NA region games are pretty cheap until you get into later releases and few others that are just oddly priced IMO.
  • I wanted the Sonic the Hedgehog games and on Ebay US they are crazy hard to find. Ebay UK has them for a pound each. I was told it's region free but I didn't know if the game would adapt to 60 vs 50 frames and the smaller screen resolution. I know there are color differences as well but the console may handle that. I'll give one a shot and see how it goes.
  • Master System is RGB based (large model US consoles output it). So games are unaware of composite or RF.

Think of 50/60 frames and English/Japanese as the two settings games may detect.

Most games play best at 60, safely ignoring Japanese. But some switch language.

I'd use a flash cart for Japan only games. JP-to-US direction pin converters are still experimental, first prototype happened this week.

Even then just a few later games work on the US bios.

  • So it's best to stick with UK or US releases then? I'm totally new to the world of Sega and forgot that the SMS was different there like the NES.

Thanks for the help. I'm off to Ebay.co.uk now.
  • Yeah Brazil games are expensive for your taste.

As my post implies, max video clarity is an area SMS stomps all over NES.

Don't need that ludicrous cost PPU replacement job or whatever...

there are some games, like sonic, that are exactly the same between US and Euro EXCEPT the US version has a UPC sticker on the case. So in that case, yes, just get a euro copy and ignore the US version with the UPC.

So unless you are trying to collect specifics, I would just get the games you want from whatever region.

This man speaks the truth. Ignore that UPC.
