Toshabi's "You Lost n' I Found" Turbo, Lightning, Dual-shock, Championship, Hyper Edition Finds Thre
Ahoy!
So, I decided that I should probably start one of these threads to keep a better record of what I've found from Goodwills, Salvation armies and misc thrift stores. I plan on updating this thread weekly rather than daily, primarily because I visit Goodwill and Salvation Army on a daily basis. I work within walking distance of both of them, so I frequent them quite often on my lunch break. I'd rather compile things I get from the week to make one clean report rather than have 7 reports scattered/lost amongst the chatter. Additionally, I /miiight/ plan on updating this opening post with a list of what I find seperated by weeks, as well as listing what games/artifacts I found for each week, as well as a picture (hyperlinked), description/quality of the items, as well as locations. What will most likely happen is that I will just post as I go. Rather than listing everything I've found since I've started (seeing how I meshed a lot of my old findings to my roommate), I'm just goint to start this thread off with what I found for this week.
Please Note: Requests for additional pictures of my finds are allowed and encouraged. Just please note the item and what kind of respositioning you want of it and I'll have it done as soon as I check my thread. Before you make a request, make sure the item wasn't sold or traded (I will make a small note of that by each item number as the years go by).

Condition: Case has slight crack on front end but is still very much intact, both CDs in mint condition, mint manual w/ postcard.

Schizm for PC
Condition: The case has a large crack on the back, but the innards are in good, working condition. The CDs are in mint condition, however, the manual is missing.
Location: Salvation Army
Taiko: Drummaster for PS2
Condition: The case is beautiful, however, there are small indents on the back side of it (It kind of looks like someone might've set a small object with pointy legs on it to keep said object elevated). The disk is clean as a whistle and the manual looks brand new.
Location: Salvation Army.
Max Payne for PC
Condition: The case held up well for being in a bin, nothing too noticable is wrong with it aside from a few scratches. The CD is mint without a scratch, however, the manual is missing.
Location: Salvation Army
Scorcher for PC
Condition: The case has scratches all over with it, along with two parallel cracks on the back of it. The manual is in very good condition as well as the CD. Nothing that a good scrubbing can't fix for the CD.
Location: Salvation Army
Croc 2 for PC
Condition: The case is a little dirty, but it's in fairly good condition. The CD has scratches around it and is in decent condition. The manual is the best looking thing in this set.
Location: Salvation Army.
StarCraft for PC
Condition: The case has a lovely crack across the front bottom-left corner. The CD is so mint, that if you put it in your mouth, your breath will attract gorgeous women. As for the manual (well, cover art thing that has installation instructions), it's in purty good shape!
Location: Salvation Army.
Starcraft: Brood Wars Expansion Set for PC
Condition: The case has plenty of light scratches, but is in fairly good condition given it's age. The Manual is in mint condition and the CD is in very good shape.
Location: Salvation Army.

Items in Batch 2 (From top left to bottom right)
Tetris for NES
Condition: Cart only in Very good shape. No box. No manual.=[ =[ =[ =[ =[ =[ =[

Sonic Spinball for Sega Genesis
Condition: Cart only in very good condition. I'm going to let you guess if there was a box/manual with this kart only find.
Location: Goodwill
Pokemon: Silver Version (JP) for GBC
Condition: Cart only in very good conditoin. The box and manual are invisible.
Location: Very scary thrift store
Pokemon Myster Dungeon: Explorers of Sky Pencil Tin (JP) for School
Condition: The tin is in very good shape. On the inside, it yeilds some very beautiful concept art of the game (Mess hall and some picture of a team helping an oddish). It also has a removable middle tray which yields a secret compartment for story secret stuff (like dirty images of the girl from class A).
Location: Goodwill
Pokemon Black and White Version Strategy Guide (JP) for Nintendo DS/Reading
Condition: This guide is beautiful. The content in it makes the guides we get in the US look like a rush job. If only I could read moonrunes....
Location: Some Thriftstore down the street
Pokemon Black and White 2 Pokedex (JP) for Nintendo DS/Reading
Condition: This pokedex is the bee's knees. Seriously, it's beautiful! I love it! If only I could read it! Small bend down the middle of the front cover, but it isn't too noticable. I'm keeping this.
Location: Some Thriftstore down the street. The lady who I bought this from said "Have fun reading something you can't read". How rude. >:[
Gorrillaz: Rise of the Ogre for Music/Reading
Condition: Very clean and in mint condition. I know this isn't a videogame nor is it videogame related, but I thought it was a very beautiful book to mention.
Location: Some Thriftstore down the street.
Items in Batch 3
Resident Evil 5 Mirror for Decoration
Condition: Brand-spanking-new! Aside from a few fingerprints, this bad boy hasn't been taken out of its box. To show off its reflectiveness, that's me doing an action camera pose for you. The lettering on the mirror is the detail I like the most about this.
Location: Goodwill
Batch 4: http://i.imgur.com/JfV9uHa.jpg
Items in Batch 4
N64 Official 12 Game Storage Cabinet for N64/Accessories
Condition: Very mint. Not a single dent/scratch (from what I've noticed) could be found on it. This was probably my favorite find of the week.
Location: Goodwill, underneath a bunch of plastic kitchen containers.
I'll edit this post later for spelling/grammar/formatting errors later. Enjoy!
Comments
Well, week 2 was a litle weak in terms of find volume, however, the items that I was able to walk away with were rather intruiging and worth a little something. A total of 8 dollars got me this week's small, humble bundle.
After Dark Games for PC: http://i.imgur.com/fRmSEW3.jpg
Condition: Mint. The disk and manual are all there and the case is relatively clean. I was quite shocked to find out that this game goes for quite a bit for such a niche, unusual game.
Location: Salvation Army.
Panzer Command for PC: http://i.imgur.com/fgY597r.jpg
Condition: Very mint disk/case wise, however it is lacking a manuel. This was another very obscure PC game I found this week that, oddly enough, goes for quite a bit of money. Luckily enough, this was the more valuable of the three versions of this game.
Location: Salvation Army.
Top Gun FOX 2 Joystick for PC (accessory)
Box: http://i.imgur.com/lysDghr.jpg
Joystick: http://i.imgur.com/3BuLs4d.jpg
Condition: The box is pretty worn, however, the joystick appears to have never really been used. It looks like the owner used it once or twice, then left it in storage, forever banishing it to the depths of Salvation Army and my collection. I'm quite pleased to see that this joystick goes for some good money as is.
Location: Salvation Army.
Thus ends week 2.
Week 3:
All in total, I spent about $29 dollars this week. The Fantasy Collection went for $1 at Goodwill. I was quite surprised when the game didn't appear on vg pricecharts (it goes for quite a bit on ebay). The N64 bundle went for $25 at Salvation Army. The bundle came with 1 green controller, 1 standard controller, 2 memory cards, an expansion pack (the normal pack is still in the n64), Army Men Sarges Heroes 2, and 1080 along with the hook ups. The Season 3 Digivice went for 1 dollar at Salvation Army (and was probably my most favorite find of this week). The Fallout lunchbox went for 2 dollars at Goodwill. I gotto say, this week wasn't so bad!
I consider southern California to be the golden land of retro hunting. Pat the NES punk, Retrohungry?, The Big game Hunter, and a dozen other people so big into collecting they have shows about it, are all between LA and San Diego and despite the large amount of them down there they all seem to pick up $5 Vectrex consoles, $10 CIB Earthbounds, $2 EVOs, $10 mint Panzer Dragoon Sagas, and so much more, constantly.
I've thought about moving down there but it seems silly to move just to buy games... or is it?

I live in San Diego too and you pretty much hit the nail on the head
Always able to get lucky at Salvation Army or Goodwill down here though...soooooometimes.
Personally, I find games to be much harder to find in San Diego then I did back up around the outskirts of LA. However, I just found a Goodwill today that had some rather good inventory (I knew I said I wouldn't go out to go check out thrift stores today, but I honestly couldn't resist this one that was right by a place we visited). I definitely liked what I found today, but that's only because I cam across my first snes cart in the wild (well, while living at this new location in San Diego). All these items are from Goodwill. Paid a total of 9 dollars (would've been 10, but I had a student discount).
So yeah! I found this really nice Goodwill that I could've swore was a comic book store. They had LOADS of games, dvds, manga, ect. ect. Sure, a lot of the games were crap, but I found a box with some crappy genesis sports games, w/e gbc games ect. In that box were the gameboy game Revenge of the Gator (which isn't that valuable, but alligators are my favorite animal so yeah) and Bust-a-Move for the Snes. In the comic book isle, they had quite a few Nintendo Power magazines, but this was the only one of the bunch that actually caught my eye. Going on through the CD section, I found these, the Kingdom Hearts 2 japanese soundtrack being my absolute favorite find of the three.
So yeah, I think I'm going to come back to this location next week to see if they have any more goodies! I'm kinda glad I went out of my way for this Goodwill. Sure, these finds aren't pricey by any respect, but it's so great to find stuff like this in the wild. c:
Regardless, because of my niche store search scope, this is why my finds aren't as significant as other threads you'll find on this site. I plan on looking around at garage sales when I get a bit more settled in at San Diego, since I just moved here not too long ago.

Pawn shops there aren't much to look at as they'll have regular resellers go in and pick it clean so you're hitting the best choice unless the Santee flea market still has some goodies but I haven't been there in a couple years. You're right though if it's Nintendo and worse yet, first party namesake worthy it's trouble. You are doing a niche search sure but guaranteed east end you're not the only one as there's more resellers in the southern half of the county than the north and very on top of things. I'd be very happy with what you're getting so far as that's good.
I agree. Shoot, I've lived in East San Diego my whole life and collected retro games for 10+ years and Toshabi's found more than I have (and I'm his roommate, to boot) in ~3 months. It's super dry here. Went to Kobey's swap meet a couple years back and quite literally spent all day finding nothing, so I kind of just figured it's a lost cause here. Miiiight check out the Santee Swap Meet sometime just for kicks...it can't hurt too much.
Oceanside and sometimes Escondido up north had stuff, mostly the Oside one, but about a year before a moved this mass reseller in the county went up there to scam all the regulars and poached the area clean for 4 weekends straight until people figured it out. He'd buy up all the 1-5 dollar games, set up a booth dead center of the place, and ask like 20-30% over ebay for things bought 10min earlier without even checking them out. It was an assembly line scam. After that the $20 that could get you up to 10 games would get you 1-2 maybe, eventually it fell back but not to even 1/2 of the level it was. Then the state of CA started giving out free data net mobile phones to illegal aliens and the people under the poverty line and it was advertised on mailers, saw those phones show up weekly with games now going at the ebay level so I more or less quit other than going out to get weekly exercise and a few hours break from an infant at the time and to get goodies if I ever had luck (mostly didn't, but one 4 week stretch between June and July last year was like the old days, stunning finds, but then died again.) Members on NA I used to see there say it's now very thin and priced over online levels, I'd believe them as they have no reason to steer me away as I'm out of state.
Sounds like you had it rough Tanooki. I haven't had much time to explore San Diego as much as you have, but things are pretty picked clean here. I hope that my luck doesn't dry up any time soon, because today was a very great day for me. So I changed my hunting tactics today to make it so I can visit Salvation Army and Goodwill in the morning during my first break. I have to make a mad dash to make it there, scurry through everything and get back to my desk on time, but hot damn, I actually found stuff today! Normally, I'd just post this in the weekly report, but I felt like this was an exceedingly great find today for the price I got it for! Everything you see below this message was purchased for a messily $5.00 total!
- Original Gameboy (No battery cover, I might order one to complete it) w/ manual
- Tennis w/ manual
- Tetris
- Roadrash for the N64
Yup, I'm planning on hitting the same places with the same tactic. I'm leaning more towards visiting Salvation Army first , what with these finds I got today. The man up front told me they get stuff like this in regularly, but they sell out before lunch! Time to beat some suckers to the chase to grab me some better finds! >:[
For $5 you very well should get a replacement back on that GB, keep it at work for your breaks with that Tetris game and you're set. I'm not sure where you are within east county as it's a relative term from south to santee and northward into places like escondido and whatever between. I think what I said before would be your best spots to check that aren't goodwills and salvation army type places.

One visit is not enough to really evaluate a place. I've had some luck at small flea markets because I stuck with them for the long haul. You really need to go several times to get a true feel for a place. How many new people do they get each time you go? How crowded is it? What kind of sellers are there? What are the prices of non game things? What cultures are in the area and make up the flea market?
I have a couple secret places I go.One of them I've visited one to five times a week for about 2 years now and I've only found and bought 3 things from them: Secret of Evermore for $2, several Disney NES games (a couple with boxes) for $0.25 each, and a stack of PS2 games including some $10 RPGs for $1 each.
I went months before I ever saw a single videogame related thing but I kept going anyways.
It's definately a time vs returns quandry. Do you invest a lot of time into the hunt Toshabi?

Valid point, I just had no interest in going back after my experience + other collecting friends in the area's experience there. Toshabi and I will probably go at some point once the weather cools down, but I'm not expecting much (but the thrill of not knowing is always there!)
He really made my birthday one to remember after he dumped all of these goodies on me.
I think I did pretty decently this week. As posted previously, I found a gameboy with 3 games (2 gameboy, 1 n64) for a total for 5 bucks, I got a Golf for 2 bucks and all those goodies up top via my room mate for my birthday (Thanks again Simba! :^D). Anyways, lets go reveal what else I found this week lurking the reseller infested streets of San Diego!
Pokemon yellow manual for $.34 at Salvation army.
An atari Flashback 2 with all its original controllers + hook ups. Additionally, the person at Salvation army mistakenly gave me 3 original atari joysticks + some paddles for free with this. I bought this whole lot for $7.00 total.
So me and Simba are looking around Pawnshops while we were heading out to eat when we came across a smaller one with a case of DS games. It was on a shelf out of view, so I asked the owner to let me take a peak inside. The owner grabs the games "Yeah yeah, go ahead and look through them, they're just a bunch of girls games. 5$ a piece unless it says so otherwise". Inside of the lot was, indeed, a bunch of really stupid girls games. Among these really stupid girly games was probably the most feminine, most stupidest game of the lot
Pokemon White version. There was no sticker on the back, so I walked away with it for $5.00! Whoever owned this game caught a shiny galvantula, which was the icing on the cake (considering Simba has never EVER seen a shiny pokemon IRL before).
So with that , I think I got a pretty good hull this week (birthday items included). Here's to hoping this coming up week is half as good!
Edit:
One last thing. I forgot to mention that I won this Tatsunoko vs Capcom fight stick for the wii for a measily $13.00!
I forgot how beautiful a complete SNES game looked; manuals, ads and all. Thanks big brother for getting me into the grand world of gaming!
