We're back (kinda) -- Also, NA Mobile testers needed

Well, I've had to temporarily block Googlebot again... I'll figure this out yet!

In the meantime, any of you mobile users that want to test out the super doooper hyper combo mega early version of NA mobile, use the following link:

http://www.nintendoage.com/?execMode=simple

There's a link on that version that will take you back. Once a few folks do some testing, I'll be enabling the mobile.nintendoage.com URL.

  • Coolio, I don't have mobile but i tested it out anyway. Looks pretty cool. Hopefully you'll get the googlebot issue resolved.
  • Mmmmm, mobile...will have to get that iPhone after all now!

Not sure if some of the avatar and banner pics may be a bit too big for some mobile devices?
  • Could be -- I haven't done much removing in the forums area yet. I wanted to get some input on the general home layout, the arrangement, etc.
  • I'll give it all a whirl on my wife's iPod Touch tonight and report back on how it goes.
  • The simplified version of the site you're using right now rocks on my phone. It's really fast and uncluttered.
  • System: 8525 phone

    OS: Windows Mobile 5

Browser: built in IE, "default" view, "smallest" zoom

    Screen: 320x240 (widescreen)

    Front page - good
    image

category listing - doesnt need rss column
    image

topic listings - does not fit to screen horizontally, need to scroll. likely from having the new/rss/pages/search on same line. small issue since the topic is the most important part
    image

post - user info takes almost horiz screen space. scale user images or remove completely for much smaller download?
    image

    database listing - good
    image

    database entry - good

  • Alright, I've had a little more time to play around with the mobile site...

    BlackBerry 8830

    BlackBerry OS ver 4.2.2.196

    Standard BlackBerry browser (not IE)

    Screen: 320x240

This phone is probably very similar in operation to the one that bunnyboy used to test the site.

The front page and database entries all load perfectly and are really easy to read and navigate.

When I load the category listings, everything shows up, but the "last post" section appears underneath the "name" "rss" and "topics" sections and it's difficult to read. It definitely isn't as neatly organized as the pics from bunnyboy's IE browser.
I'm not sure if I could fix this by changing my browser settings or not.

I'm still getting a page render error when I try to load particular subforums, so I can't check the layout of the topic listings. When I check out the "latest posts" and "latest topics" links, everything loads fine.

When I start reading posts, I too get the huge user info panel which sandwiches all of the post text into one side of the screen, sometimes making the posts hard to read.

I think if I could get the page render errors fixed, I'd be really happy with the mobile site. It loads much quicker than the standard site.

  • I've got Bunnyboy's fixed -- I'll see if I can find anything in the code for the subforums.
  • All I see now is the mobile version (even on my PC)
  • i'll try it out on my newly arrived SE G900 image

i'll let you know if something buggy shows up
  • Had problems with the iPod Touch last night (damn apple's latest software update's screwed it up). May be able to get to it tonight.

The change to user names on a single line looks good

Click on the "Normal Version" link at the top of the page or go to this link:

    http://www.nintendoage.com/?execMode=Normal
  • post from phone, more to come soon!
  • iPod Touch
    Firmware 1.1.4
    No Zoom
    Looks great!
I'm guessing this would be the same on an iPhone

    i-mate SP5
Windows Mobile 5 (Smart Phone Edition)
    240x320 resolution

Note this tested the width of the page pretty hard!

Issue: I couldn't log in from the default login page, had to go to a different link to get the login page on the left menu bar. From there I could log in. I guess that this wouldn't be an issue if redirected straight to mobile mode?

Issue 2: Title boxes on the front screen didn't stretch vertically to accommodate a multi-line title - only aesthetic issue

Main forum list looked ok, again, maybe RSS isn't nesessary here?

    Forum looked ok

Reading a post - looked good.

Database search - a little squised, but what can you do? image

    Database entry - looks good

    Other comments:
    • There is a lot of whitespace in the source code for these pages, is it possible to strip this out before sending them to save mobile users a bit of bandwidth? Anywhere else that pages can be simplified to save bandwidth? (mobile data's pretty expensive here in Aus, and I believe in quite a few other countries too, so cutting down page size would be beneficial)
    • Can you default it to a san-serif font family? Even just a simple font family directive for the whole page/site may make it a little nicer to read image
Other than that, all seems pretty good image the 240x320 resolution is pretty extreme, and I can't imagine a site looking much better than that on it while still providing as much information.
  • GREAT info -- btw, what's the resolution on the iPod Touch? I'm creating view port resolution settings in my web dev browser tool.
  • I think Brian mentioned 480x320 -- is that correct for that one?
  • yup iPod touch is 480
  • Like Zzap, I can't seem to login.

    I'm using Windows mobile 6 on a HTC S710.

I can see the login field but I can't enter my name and password.
  • I think this is because the form fields are dynamically written with JavaScript... I'll be updating quite a bit here over the next few days.
  • I might have to upgrade to a Ipod touch just so I can have the NA databse always in my pocket. How does the internet service work on it.I do not have highspeed at home,Can I still use it other places though and is their a fee?
  • One issue I noticed is quoted text in postings. The "originally posted by" appears in italics (correct) but the quoted text and posted text are both the same. Makes it hard to tell where quoted ends. Theres no box around the quoted text. I can take a pict if needed.
  • I noticed that as well... I'm curious, how well do handhelds do with CSS these days?
  • Chad, there is no fee. It just has the ability to browse the internet in Wifi spots. It won't work everywhere. Only in places like Starbucks or McDonald's. Places that have free wifi.

    I'm an idiot
  • Just got a Blackberry Curve 8330 last night.  I love it!  Tried to get on the NA mobile site and was able to get on but have had rendering errors when I try to go into a sub-forum (from the main forum screen).  Just thought I'd throw that out there... I know Dain is a busy man...

I've always gotten the same errors with my Blackberry as well. I just check the "latest posts" when I'm on my phone and it works fine.
  • I'm addicted. Fucking awesome.
  • I know there's probably some really easy fix but I clicked on the link in my browser and now whenever I got the forums it comes up like the mobile phone page. Hope you know what I mean, how do I change it back?

    Cheers
