Saturn. Good to collect for?

I really love the saturn, and while I hear many games are extremely difficult to find, I still want to collect them.

I want to start first with games id enjoy. Do you guys have any good platformers or horror games you recommend for the SS? Also, I am in the USA so obviously they need to be NTSC-UC

  • yep has loads of top quality games, look at japenese games especially.

burning rangers is good, resident evil is good on saturn mansion of hidden souls, i could go on.

Saturn always was underated always over shadowed by playstation, and it was actually a better machine in a lot of respects.

  • Well, I know for a fact id like Nights, because I had the PS3 port and it was awesome.

Croc is another game id get, since I absolutely adored it on the PC.
  • The system is great but the prices are almost reaching Nintendo territory. It's rare but Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of the few rare games I don't regret purchasing.
  • I've recently started getting some games for the Saturn myself.

Clockwork Knight and Skeleton Warriors are good platformers, and Skeleton Warriors is a really impressive game visually and has some really cool horror elements to the design... The Saturn version can be gotten for about $20, but the PS1 version's about $10, so do with that what you will. Another game that looks really interesting that I unfortunately haven't had much time to play is D. It's an all CGI animated FMV horror game. Apparently, it's one of the few FMV games that was actually done well.

The original Panzer Dragoon is really good. I don't generally like shoot 'em ups at all, but that game's just great. It looks gorgeous, it has great atmosphere and most importantly, it's a lot of fun. Not sure about Panzer Dragoon II, but I hear it's good as well.

There's also a port of Tomb Raider on the Saturn that's pretty cheap, so if you like Tomb Raider, it's affordable even if you have the PS1 version if you just want some more games to play on Saturn.

Also, get Nights Into Dreams. Holy crap, get Nights Into Dreams. That game is ridiculously good. I wanted to play it since it came out in the nineties, and when I played it for the first time about a month ago, I was practically glued to the TV screen for a good hour, mesmerized. I'll give it a little bit longer before it becomes one of my favorite games ever.
  • I can´t recommend the saturn enough!

But you should really get a action replay cart so you can play games from all regions

because the best games only got japanese releases. But you have plenty good us releases

like. Bug!, Astal, shining force, sega rally, resident evil

  • The Saturn is a godly system for 2D games especially if you're a big fan of shooters (look to Japan) and fighting games. 3D games not so much, but there's still some classics like Panzer Dragoon and Nights.

It's also got the best version of bomberman for multiplayer if you've got 2 multitaps and 10 controllers. My only gripe is that they only give you one map to play on. It's still insanely fun with 8 players and all the other available maps too.

Most of the best games are going to cost you and arm and a leg too.
  • Saturn is my fav Sega system, great to collect for and full of value. Shining Force 3 is a great game , but really the Saturn has one of the most consistenly good libraries of any system.

If you look at the imports Saturn only gets better.
  • I love collecting for the Saturn. My #1 gripe is the stiff competition you get from all the die hard Saturn fans there aren't many games that go under the radar or online listings that go unnoticed. And finding someone locally that just happens to be selling an awesome Saturn lot at a reasonable price is probably not going to happen.
  • Finding Saturn stuff locally is a huge challenge. I saw one good Saturn lot come into a local store, but most of the best stuff was bought by the employees before I even had a shot. I'm talking $8 PDS< Saturn Bomberman, Guardian Heroes and the guy even traded in a CIB MUSHA. I got the Guardian Heroes for $50 from one of the guys because he didn't know what was up. I wish I was there when the guy walked in though. I would've offered him way more than they did because they paid him pennies.
  • :0 holy shit! I saw in a local store the day after a Saturn lot got traded in, hesitated on Gaurdian Heroes for $80, went back in the next day and not only way it gone, but every other game was also gone! Ppl who collect Sega Saturn have deep pockets (deeper than mine lol).
  • Finally. Somebody who likes platformers and doesn't want just RPGs. Welcome to the Saturn world sir. I will first say that I agree with dballin. Most get Saturns for the plethora of shooters (mostly being foreign).

I am a platformer/side scrolling beat-em-ups person. Beat-em-ups on the system doesn't seem promising. I really want to pick up skeleton warriors, but they are asking too much lately for it and the copies just sit on ebay and never sell. Guardian Heroes is an expensive title that seems revered as one of the best ever for beat-em-ups and probably the best on the system.

As for platformers, here is a list of the ones I know of. I prefer 2D platformers for sure and that is why I picked up the saturn. The colors are just so amazing where the PS1 looks like smeared poop.

    Platformers 2D:

Gex (also on PS1 but better on Saturn)

    Croc

    Astal (Definitely recommend)

    Bug!

    Bug Too!

Clockwork Knight (a staple for saturn platformers)

    Clockwork Knight 2

Shinobi Legions (not a huge fan and it's a bit on the higher priced side but if you like the

    -----------------------shinobi series is stays true)

Earthworm Jim 2 (slightly better graphics than the original and better sound, but the pixels

------------------------are off so the snot swing is retarded; I prefer the genesis version for game

    ------------------------control purposes)

Silhouette Mirage (no idea how the game is. the saturn version is JP only and costs $40 where

-------------------------the PS1 version costs about $5)

Rayman (best version of the game by far. pushes color for sure which I really enjoy.)

Mr. Bones (I hear good things, but watching the youtube videos of it reminds me of dragon's

---------------lair for the sega CD and I think that game blows.

    Platformers 2.5D:

Pandemonium (was really hard for me to get into and is frustrating but worth a look)
  • No one mentions Megaman 8 or X4? For shame. Although X4 is identical content wise to the PS1 version, I still prefer it if only for the superior controller (seriously, playing Megaman on a Dualshock is something they do in hell).

Virtua Fighter 2 is one of the cheapest games the system has to offer and is one of my favourite fighters of all time. It still holds up well today.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is a cheaper title for Saturn as well and I believe it is the best version of the game (for many years people said UMK3 was the best MK game, at least until MK9 came out).

I must also profess my love for Bug! and Bug Too! although they've already been mentioned. I must also support Gex, a highly underrated game. Frankly I find Clockwork Knight to be a very bland game, but many people seem to enjoy it.

Other good NTSC-U/C games? Hmmm. Sonic 3D Blast is a good game in my opinion although many people dislike it. The special stages are amazing on the Saturn version. Sonic R is a decent racing game, Daytona USA is also a cheap and good racing game. Sonic Jam is a mostly unnecessary compilation but it does have the cool hub world.
  • Saturn Bomberman. Get that game.

Commands quite the price. I would suggest only if going to play a lot or really enjoy mega bomberman. Never played it, but I'm sure it's great.

  • It's awesome with large groups of people if you've got the multitaps and controllers. Unfortunately I'm quite the shut in so it barely gets any use.
  • Saturn Bomberman is probably one of the best, if not the best classic Bomberman title. I have Bomberman Online for Dreamcast, and it just doesn't feel as good. Probably also due to the fact that Dreamcast D-Pads aren't that great.
  • Metah mentioned Virtua Fughter 2 And UMK3 so I have to put out there Street Fighter Alpha 1 & 2. What excellent arcade ports. Hell, if you enjoy fighters in the least, the Saturn. Is. It. Two of my other favorite games Xmen Children Of Atom and Marvel Super Heroes. Four really kick ass games ahead of their time.
  • X-Men Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes are indeed great games, the spritework was so good in both games they reused the sprites all the way until 2000's Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. If you can find them for a decent price I'd go for them.
  • Also maybe someone here can help me out. I often see Panzer Dragoon Saga for sale with both white and black sleeves for the other 3 disc. I assume black is the original and the white are replacement sleeves right?
  • Both sleeve colors are original. Neither is a replacement.
  • That's... strange. Do you know why there are two colours or it's just because?
  • Mine is in some random box in the house, but I'm pretty sure they're white. I've even seen CIB copies with mixed colors. I don't know if there's any rhyme or reason to the sleeves.

I believe there were two different print runs of the game, an initial run and then a second run.  My copy has mixed sleeves, however my friend's copy (bought new back in the 90s) has only black sleeves.  As far as I know it's the only Saturn game to have sleeves like that making it unique in that sense.

Street Fighter Collection has 1 sleeve. Thats all I can think of w.o looking.
  • You're right! I checked my copy of Street Fighter Collection last night. I thought all games that came with a second disc used that special tray that fits in the longbox. Now I'm intrigued...
  • Enemy Zero also uses sleeves as it has four discs like PDS.
  • All this Saturn greats talk and I don't think anyone mentioned X-Men VS. Street Fighter! One of the main reasons I bought a Saturn to begin with a few years ago was for that game. I also love 2D fighters though so maybe I am a little biased.

But if you are collecting for the Saturn, getting an Action Replay Plus cart is a MUST not just for the ability to play imports but also for the extra RAM it provides for certain games that require it... This way you don't have to worry about finding a complete copy of a game with the RAM cart... Unless you are going for CIB collecting. Also, the Action Replay Plus allows for a lot of extra memory storage.
  • I'm love too with the sega saturn :3, but is hard to collect and buy games for it because is a really rare console. I can recommend any rpg for it, I'm playing Dark Savior and is pretty good, have a unique style because is rpg mix with a fighting game. For horror games there are D and Enemy Zero. For the reason that is a really old console this games arent scary at all, the gameplay also sucks because is like a old point and click game, but if dont mind you the orthodox style of it try them, I really loved played D because you have only 2 hours to beat the game and have really hard puzzles. Also Lunacy is other good game. For the plataformers Astal, Clocker Knight and Gex are pretty good and also the Panzer dragoon series are quite enjoyable
  • How does the Action Replay Plus unit actually work? Just put it in and any NTSC-J game will work on your console when you boot it up?

Yeah it just goes in the cartridge slot and then when you boot up any import it goes to a screen to choose between starting the game, putting in cheats or using the memory function. Very simple. You can just keep the cartridge in all the time.
