Why is NHL 94 valuable all of a sudden?

Im using "valuable" as a relative term, in that I used to collect genesis stuff about 3 years ago and just recently started to get back into it, and I remember at one point having 7 copies of this game and not being able to sell them for a $1 and I just checked ebay and somehow loose copies are selling now from $7 - $10, with quite a few boxed copies in the $20 range, which I absolutely do not understand. What makes this command a premium when every other EA sports game is $1 - $3 at best?

  • I might be getting it mixed up but I think the game is really fun and word is getting out that the game is basically another NBA Jam. In other words even a non sports fan can like it.
  • Is it being used as a donor for any reproductions?

    this was my guess
  • You can make Gretzky's head bleed. Was played in the movie Swingers and is a popular reference.
  • I noticed this too awhile back when I had acquired about a half dozen '94s at various yard sales, so I did some research. From what I read, NHL '94 is considered the best hockey game of the 16-bit era. EA included the game as an extra on a later XBox hockey title. IIRC, there is an active community that keeps the roster updated each year not unlike the Tecmo Bowl hacks. So I can guess there is a reasonable amount of demand from gamers who are hockey fans that is bolstering the price on this title.
  • I always thought that NHL 98 was the valuable one but having a complete copy with all inserts, poster, and the trading card I could a twenty dollar bill. I actually think that the newest NHL 14 has the classic 94 built in and it may drive it's popularity like teh said.
