Sega SMS/Genesis is better than NES/SNES!

NES games are great, so are SNES games. But, for some strange reason I keep wanting to buy/collect/own Genesis/Mega Drive games.

Golden Axe, Toe Jam, Phantasy Star II, Herzog Zwei. This is a freaking awesome system.

I love discovering new games. There are so many great ones that I don't know about.

Why do you love SEGA over NES/SNES?

  • I actually dont care too much for NES games. About 5% of them are tolerable, the rest are pure junk. SMS is such a higher system in terms of better designed accessories, smoother looking games, packaging, controllers, and even the library itself. Its only about 20% the size but there are more replayable games on the SMS than the NES total. The SNES, however, is arguably better than the Genesis. Nintendo created one of its best controllers on the SNES as well some of the best RPGs of all time appeared on that system. All the issues of the loading of cartridges went pretty much obsolete with the SNES. The Genesis, on the other hand, filled the shelves with horrible shovelware and (against popular opinion) went backwards in its controller design.

I agree with the above 100%.

As for Genesis over SNES, I've never played an SNES. Ever. I had a Genesis in college and that's what I've stuck with. For some reason I thought the Sega CD was frickin' awesome back in the day, and I still do.

  • They're all great consoles, and they're great for very different reasons. There exists no logic sound enough to bash any of them or argue why or why not one is better than another. Old regime fanboyism is tired and unwarranted.

    Because Full Motion Video

Is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be !

    Agreed.

  • As a console, I love the Sega Genesis more. The games I do love on the SNES, however, I love the most. I was raised on Genesis, and didn't get an SNES until I was 14-15 and a friend was getting rid of his for a Playstation.

Everharm--I don't know what makes me happier: the Bret Hart reference, or the Full Motion Video! Beautiful!
  • It's all a matter of preference, so there can't truly be a right or wrong choice.

For me though, I would say that I like the NES far better than the SMS

As for 16-bit, I love the SNES and Genesis equally
  • i have to take the SNES over the Genesis for the reason of the sound and music alone. So many genesis games the sound is just horrid... like I want to die horrid.

SMS and NES is a toss up. I find a lot of the USA SMS games to be pretty bad. It sucks because it is such a superior system that got shafted over here by Nintendo.

One thing I do really like about Sega is that they went all out on the handheld side. The idea of playing a genesis on the go and the GG (and SMS with the adaptor) is so appealing. Trying to slowly grow my GG collection. Picked up a master system thing for it so I can be dorky and carry it around even though my DS can cover every system from that era no problem.
  • I personally don't like 8-bit games. They were too primitive for me. I would say NES probably wins in the category because they was at least a huge library so there have to be some good ones out there, but I will never know because I don't like that generation.

For 16-bit, I grew up with the genesis so it has my love. Again, the SNES had the bigger library but it all comes down to the controller. I think it's funny that somebody above posted how the SNES controller was the best ever made. I would have to highly disagree. Though the 2D shape has curves the 3D depth of it is a flat as a pre teens chest. There is guiding force as to where you fingers should fit comfortably; there is nowhere for them to rest on. Then I play games that were on both systems. The controls of the genesis in comparison make the SNES version unplayable in comparison.

Once we go to the next generation of gaming, I say the N64 trumps the Saturn for sure. Don't get me wrong, I have some love for the saturn, but the N64 had great coloring as well and was a better 3D system. The cherry on top was that it was the last major cartridge based system. I'll pick a cartridge based system over a disc based system anyday.

I have no opinion on the dreamcast vs gamecube as I have never played either.

    Wat?!

N64 has some solid titles for sure, but the breadth and quality of games on the Saturn outclasses the N64 in every conceivable metric to me.  I'd probably give up all my N64 games before I gave up a single Saturn game I truly cherished.

For Saturn the library is heavily JP. In my mind when comparing games I can only compare what was readily available during that time period which wasn't a lot in the US. I am also not a SHMUP fan so that might be why I disagree. Those who love that genre seem to love the Saturn like a new born child. I am not in that crowd. I think it's a good system that could have been great given a true go in the US, but unfortunately it became vaporware quickly enough.

  • I can't say that the Sega Genesis is better than the SNES nor can I say the SNES is better than the.Genesis. They both have amazing games but I can say for sure that I enjoy the Sega Genesis more than I do the SNES. Also, I know the Snes is regarded sas having the better sound quality of the two systems but I love the raw rough sound of the Genesis especially in shoot em ups.
  • I grew up with an NES and loved it. I never really knew about the Master System back then but now I love to collect for it. For 16-bit, when I wanted to play an RPG I usually turned to my Super NES, but for platformers and shooters the Genesis always won me over.
  • Its funny because I grew up on the NES... It was the first system we got and it was kept in my parents bedroom. We would have family nights where we took turns playing Super Mario Bros. But the first system that I could call mine was the Genesis. I never bothered with the SNES besides playing it at my cousins house. The Genesis was all I really cared about for a very long time as far as video game systems.

Now that I have experienced a lot of other systems, it still is hard to say which are better... And as was said it really is a personal preference.
  • I grew up on the NES then went to the Genesis. My friends had super nintendo's and we would trade systems for a week. I loved super mario world which just was an amazing game and looked amazing as a kid during that time. As far as the which one is better the debate could go on forever. The Super Nintendo has a lot of great games as did the NES. But of course the Genesis has the nostalgia factor for me even more than the NES.
  • I went from NES to the Genesis primarily and I didnt even own one my best friend had it and I had the SNES. The only games I ever really got into on the SNES were Mario's and MegaMans. The Genny was where it was at man. I still love the controller, although I think the Saturn had the best controller ever. Even for cross system games, I enjoy the Genny ones.
