  • Generally anything that isn't in a cardboard box (and even then only specific titles / systems) is not worth getting qualified grading. It is too easy. They appeal to a VERY small demographic and, as stated, the cost is not justifiable.
  • I will apologize in advance for not looking for the answer to my question in the previous 950+ posts. I also have never used VGA before. Should be a quick answer?

My question is this: I ordered the new Zelda 3DSXL bundle from Gamestop to be delivered to my door. I am thinking of having it graded since I will never open it any way. Should I not open the GameStop box it is delivered in, and just ship that in a bigger box to VGA? Will opening that GameStop box potentially hurt the grade, even if I cause no damage to it once it's open? My thoughts are if it does I won't open it, but if it doesn't I will inspect it first to determine if it should be graded. Thanks.

Also, any idea on what a 3DSXL bundle costs at the lowest price tier?
  • Here's an easy one that I don't know...Are Super Famicom games graded regularly or as Qualified since they never came sealed?
  • Bump for answers.

Personally I would open the gamestop box. You never know what gamestop did to it before packaging it up for you. They could have damaged it and you definitely dont want it to grade a 75 or something. Just my 2 cents

I believe they would be Qualified just like Earthbound for SNES. Those were never sealed and to my knowledge they are all Q graded.

That's a myth.  There are plenty of standard graded Earthbound's out there

No idea on cost as VGA will probably consider it custom.  I would definitely open that Gamestop box.  Take pics before you send it off as well.  Hope that helps.

Really? Wow, I have never seen one but I haven't really been looking either. How do they grade them as standard if they were never sealed?

Yes sir. I imagine they examine the spine very carefully to see if has any indications of being opened.  Just because a game never came wrapped doesn't mean it can't get a standard grade.  They look at how the game was originally sent i.e. wrapped, not wrapped etc. and go from there to determine qualified vs. standard.

Purrrrdy.  So in the case of Earthbound, or any SFC game, they'll check to see that the box has never been opened, right?  And if it has been opened, even once, then it's automatically bumped down to qualified?  Is that where the line is drawn since there is no seal to speak of?

Yes that is how I understand it works.  Just keep in mind all the contents are also examined for evidence of use.  from what we've gathered they go by how the games was originally sold and packaged.

See that's where I am confused. If they grade a game standard it says its never been opened. But they open it to make sure it hasn't been used? That just seems wrong of them. Idk, I actually really hate that if that's the way they do it.
  • Yeah, that is confusing...I was kind of unclear on that myself.
  • Standard = Sealed (if the item came sealed) or in the event it didnt come sealed then for a game to be graded under this tier there has to be NO signs that the box has been opened (indentations/crease line along the seem). Games that fall under this are NOT opened by vga (they effectively grade the outside of the box).

Qualified = Sealed games that have the seal missing (if no crease lines it has to still go Q and vga will open and inspect the insides) or games that never came sealed which have opening signs on the box (VGA will open and inspect all components).
  • I would love to get a few opinions on this one - I've never graded anything before.  My wife bought it for me at launch, no intentions on opening, no intentions on selling - it would be cool to get it graded but I'm not sure if the shelf wear will knock it down too low.

    Thoughts?

  • Arrived today! It's really great as I can imagine before!!! thanks again Sephiaya!
  • Good question... how many people do you guys think actually use the VGA service? It would be interesting to see how popular their service is.

Popular enough to where they are three + months behind on submissions.  Alot of members here use the service.  There are also countless other gaming platforms that they grade as well outside Nintendo related items.

Hmm, what about when it comes to reselling graded games on ebay for extra high prices just due to being graded? (Especially for newer games) Do people really make a lot of money doing that? And is it frowned upon here or do people here condone it? I mean I see people here trading graded games with each other which is cool, but I'm not sure how people here generally feel about the resellers who jack the prices of games up preventing more people from getting their hands on a copy of one for a normal price.Do the ebay ones come from people here or are they generaly outsiders?

  • So, no feedback?
  • Based off the pics I would put that in the 85/85+ range. I sent in a nearly perfec LTTP and it got a gold 85+ but it didn't have any signs of damage, your box looks to have some snags in it.
  • Question to the VGA experts here at NintendoAge:

Are the VGA cases for graded sealed games completely airtight?

I have a moldy but craptastic game I am thinking about submitting to be graded, but I want to ensure that it would be airtight and I wouldn't risk exposing my family to mold by bringing it in the house.

  • It is not completely airtight. If you push on the back panel towards the bottom it will actually slide a little bit. The back panel is not sealed with the bottom. I hope that makes sense. This is done intentionally to work as a vent.

Just seal up the vent in the back with some epoxy to make it airtight when you get it back.

If the game itself is craptastic, why not mess up the pretty VGA shell too, lol

  • obvious reseal right? still ended for an insane price... this resealing may catch on if buyers fall for it

  • Yeah looks like a reseal to me.
  • Hey guys, I just wanted to get your opinion on an item I have as to what grade it would receive. The corners and box look great, the only downside is that on the front it looks like there used to be a large sticker on it, but it was then removed leaving the seal wavy looking. I've taken the best picture I can capture of it. Also, if you want to see pictures of everything else, you can see them here (the seller conveniently did not have any good angles showing this flaw). Anyways, I'd love to hear your opinions about this. I really wanted an 80 or higher for this game, but I fear this will not end well, unfortunately.
