  • Pal A, Pal B and NTSC are region codes, NTSC is used for USA, Canada, Mexico and Japan, PAL A and B is used for Europe and Australia, don't really know how they works, but I know you can't use a game on a system of another region code, unless you have a top loader, and it even can be buggy.
  • PAL and NTSC are sort of the predecessors of region encoding. SECAM is the third standard (China, Russia and parts of Africa) but there isn't an NES that uses it.

USA, Canada, Japan and parts of South America use the NTSC standard (National Television System Committee).

Most of the rest of the world uses PAL. I don't know what the difference between A and B is beyond a region code of some sort.

NTSC and PAL differ in TV resolution and frame rate. So if you mod the lockout chip in your NES to be able to play PAL, the timing will be wonky.

  • If you want the exact acronyms, I think the main wikipedia page for each entry says it.

NTSC: National Television System Committee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ntsc)

    PAL: Phase Alternating Line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pal)
  • can a mod please move this thread to a more appropriate section... "help wanted" section, maybe?
  • A little bit off topic, but I always thought you were a mod, Seth.
  • Seth doesn't have the cool piece of bling under his name Marton! image
  • Poor him, he's probably so jealous and sad image.
  • NTSC and PAL have already been defined... A basic regional listing, from a NES perspective:

NTSC: found in North America, much of South America, South Korea, and Japan (NES carts: -USA, -CAN, -KOR, as well as Famicom carts)

PAL-A: found in the UK, Italy, and Australia (NES carts: -UKV, -ITA, -GBR, -AUS)

PAL-B: found in most of Europe (except France and Russia), Hong Kong, and China (NES carts: -EEC, -NOE, -FRA, -FRG, -ESP, -SCN, -GPS, -SWE/SWE, -HOL)

  • haha im not a mod... i would go in and modify everything to have some sort of sexual connotation and then get banned for life, so that is probably best for everyone involved! haha! image but if dain needed help with anything, i would be willing to assist in any way i can. i just dont have any free time any more except for the weekends so i couldnt monitor much at all. getting paid the big bucks means way more responsibility than i want!!! ugh!
  • Yeah, I like my avatar the way it is. It definitely doesn't need any dong added to it. If we could keep Seth out of any position in which he has any sort of actual power, that would be stellar.
  • Yay! This was just what I was looking for.
  • There's quite a bit of this stuff in the FAQ as well:
