Boy I'm glad I didn't happen to be working in this area today...

Interstate 35W bridge over Mississippi River collapsed during rush hour tonight! I cross that bridge all the time... I know there aren't many MN people on these forums, but I hope your all OK!

  • Holy crap dude!
  • Yea my uncle works near there and luckily he had been over the bridge earlier.
  • God fucking damn!
  • Wow!

Hopefully there weren't many / no people on it.
  • what was the cause of it falling
  • They were working on it I think. Several lanes were closed
  • At least 7 dead Cap, and alot missing. Feel bad for the families image
  • Damn, that really sucks... I hope if anyone here had friends or family near there that they are ok.
  • I'm in south Minneapolis, so I wasn't really anywhere near it when it happened. Not even entirely sure I've ever crossed it before.

They're still investigating the cause, and it could be awhile before they're able to pinpoint it. There are some theories, though, centering around a combination of overloading, sustained high temperatures, and potential misplacement of heavy construction equipment, but it's all just guesswork at this point. It was a fairly unique (and obviously non-redundant) design and was in mediocre condition. They were planning on replacing it around 2020, but I guess that'll happen sooner now.
  • Yes, I am very interested to see what conclusions they come up with for the failure. Looks like we can look forward to even more horrible traffic than it has been for the next 3 years, eh brideck image
  • I was glued to my TV in Vegas watching this, so sad.

  • Hey BootGod, where do you live?  I live in Blaine.  I use the bridge all the time but luckily was only one it very early that morning.
  • Blaine? You live in that trailer park, eh? lol j/k. I actually am working in Blaine all the time, in "The Lakes" development off of Radisson Rd. People have some money around there no doubt! I live near Elk River (northwestern subs), not terribly far away, but I despise the drive, 242 is beyond irritating (esp. trying to cross 65 when the light goes green for 3 seconds) and then you get to Hwy 10 thru Anoka (which surprisingly hasn't been that bad this summer). Anyways, enough bitching, what part of Blaine are you from?
  • I live near 65/133rd -- almost in Ham Lake.

  • Mmmmmmm.... Ham Lake!
