Are there any good resources for Game Gear titles?

So, I appreciate that this site has a comprehensive list of US releases, however, as a collector that only tries to find games that I myself would enjoy (or find fun to own), it's actually a big issue on this system. Of all the systems i've researched, even compared to the Neo Geo Pocket Color, this system just seems to have so little fandom anywhere. Trying to find a list of 'the best games' or things that would define it best just don't seem to exist anywhere.. Even sites like Racketboy pretty much ignore this system, and it's the last device in Segas line that I haven't really gained a healthy grasp on.

Are there any good resources out there for me to read/look through that give god break downs for game quality, even reviews, or other info? Just having a name isn't going to help entirely since even on gamefaqs the user reviews are so few, it's really bizarre to me that a system like the Virtual boy probably has more presence than this, but maybe that's just the lack of games for it

  • Reason why it probably doesn't have a huge following was they Game Gear had quite a few technical problems. It is a shame because if it didn't have those problems it would be a great little hand-held. Best resource this site has in regards to Game Gear games is Braveheart69, he is the Game Gear king.
  • It certainly does have a lot of issues, I went out of my way to find the Majesco release of the hardware to hopefully avoid some of them, but I'm no expert on it for sure. Still, it's frustrating to have such a good plucking of the worthwhile games on so many consoles and yet only being able to peg maybe 10 or 20 worthwhile games on this system.

I actually think there are many more great titles on the Game Gear, just sucks about the problems with the system itself. I remember owning two in the past and the speakers went on both of them.
  • One i've been playing lately is Ax Battler...strange mix up of genre, but I've been having fun with it.

In terms of the hardware, I suspect there are more broken GG out there than good ones but on the plus side, most of them are repairable by just replacing the capacitors. If you have any soldering skill you can do it. I've been buying up lots of broken ones lately to repair and sell on it packs with refurbished battery packs and whatever else I can toss in.

Most people need to get into this stuff, I think not enough people know about Sega anymore. Trying to do my small part.

I wouldn't mind knowing some other good games for the system as well.
  • I enjoy Castle of Illusion, Mega Man, and True Lies. I'd play GG a lot more if somebody would offer a TV output mod service.
  • I had a website last year where I covered several Game Gear games and scanned all of my manuals and box arts. I have actually submitted those scans to SegaAge, so at least that's something. While some of the scans are found elsewhere, I have never found higher-quality scans for GG so I made some. As for the reviews, one day I found my site deleted for no reason, and with that all of my reviews were gone.

My top ten English games for the system would likely be: Sonic Triple Trouble, Shining Force the Sword of Hajya, Shinobi II: The Silent Fury, the Majors: Pro Baseball (one of the only really good sports games I've ever played), Streets of Rage II, Tails' Adventure, Power Strike II (though expensive), Dragon Crystal and Megaman. The best game the system likely has to offer is surprisingly Power Rangers. The graphics and gameplay as just so smooth and fun, it's a totally legit game.

As for Ax Battler, it's a decent game, bloody difficult and frankly the end is super unsatisfying to me, but it's a cool little exclusive.

Edit: Some other games I can recommend though they are not for everyone/have aged poorly would be Robocop vs Terminator, an unforgiving and pretty well done action game, Chakan, which is just as tough as the Genesis version, Castle of Illusion and Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Power Rangers the Movie, Vampire Master of Darkness, any Sonic title (except maybe Sonic Chaos), Bust-A-Move, Dragon the Bruce Lee Story, Bubble Bobble, Virtua Fighter Animation and even Primal Rage for a fighting game that's actually pretty decent despite being on a handheld system.
