New to all this!

What's up everybody!

So I stumbled across this site yesterday and I'm hooked. I figured I might as well sign up now, because it is inevitable.

Here's the story:

This weekend my wife and I decided it's time to clean out our office/storage room to have an organized home office for our business. This room has kind of become the "shove random stuff in there and close the door so you don't get overwhelmed" room in our house. Don't judge me, the garage is my domain and I keep it spotless!

We bought our house from my mother in law, so some of the things in the closets were things that have been there for years. This was the first time that we pulled EVERYTHING out of the closets. WAY back behind all kinds of other stuff I saw a storage box with drawers. Who knows how long it's been there.

We opened it up and there it was in all its beautiful black and grey glory! The NES in PERFECT condition! I felt like a kid on Christmas morning! In the other drawers were 4 controllers, the zapper gun, all the original cords, and games. 42 in total and they all work perfectly. It was my wife's NES from childhood and had been stored away and forgotten. We stepped up our pace with the cleaning so we could hook it up and play. We put in Super Mario Bros. 3 and felt like we were kids all over again. INSTANTLY we were completely hooked!

Which brought us here. We immediately got online to do some research and it led me here. I have already learned a ton. I had no idea there were so many collectors of Nintendo out there! Anyway, my wife and I want to start collecting, but we really have no idea where to start. What advice would you guys have for a total newbie? Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm looking forward to being part of NA. Awesome site!

  • Cool story and welcome! My suggestion as far as starting out collecting would be to just focus on stuff that you KNOW you will like to collect. In my experience, collecting multiple systems with a few games for each rather than focusing on one at a time can lead to burnout more quickly. Also, look at what type of financial commitment you're willing to make which will then dictate how you go about collecting. There are multiple threads throughout the site with more info, but off the top of my head, these are the two I think of first.
  • Awesome story. Welcome to the site
  • Thanks for the welcome! And thanks for the advice irontoupee.

NES. We only want to collect NES. We know that for sure. My wife has put the word out and we already have appointments to buy some games this weekend. I guess there's no better way to start than to just do it.
  • Nice story, as for where to start. You can either try finding games at thrift stores, pawn shops, antique stores, etc, or if you want something in particular, look up game stores in your area. They seem to be popping up all over the place. NA is great for finding games too.

    Good luck and welcome
  • Welcome to the site, collecting can be just as fun as the gaming!
