  • All the D&D games are based on the pen and paper games

Good list just some nitpicks.  It gets kind of fuzzy between "game is based on" or "character originated from"

Fester's Quest was based on the Adams Family TV show.  The Adams Family game is based loosely on the Movie.  Pugley's Scavenger Hunt is based on the cartoon.

Where's Waldo was based on the book series.  Great Waldo Search was based on the cartoon and featured the theme song.

Sesame Street is a tv show not a cartoon

Snoopy is from the Peanuts comic.  Spy vs Spy is based on the comic, game came out long before any cartoons.

Gun.Smoke has nothing to do with the tv show that is why it has a . to avoid trademark problems.

Lone Ranger is based on a radio drama.

    American Gladiators is a gameshow.

Jekyll and Hude and Frankenstein are books.  Swamp Thing is a comic.  Conan is a book game is not based on any of the movies at all.

Nice catch, adding them after this post.

What about Ultima and Wizardry? Are they pen and paper games or are they unique to video games?

Edit: I also missed Dragon Power (aka Dragon Ball)
  • Also, does anyone know if "Cowboy Kid" is based on the classic Radio Show?
  • Defenders of Dinotron City was a comic, and air one pilot episode of that animated series.

Monster in my Pocket was based on the comic and animated series

Swamp thing was a comic, movie, and animated series.

I think there was an Attack of the killer tomatos cartoon as well

All these games where more so based on the cartoons I believe.

Which was first, the game or the comic? Either way, they were both released in 1992 so I suppose it's close enough that it gets both.

Edit: Also, apparantly Puss'N Boots is a sequel to a japanese Famicom game that is directly based on the Japanese feature film The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots
  • Are you going solely by where the characters or premise first appeared?

Because Batman The Video Game and Batman Returns were both explicitly tied to the Tim Burton movies, even if Batman himself dates back to the 30s.
  • Ikari Warriors is taken from the Japanese name for Rambo 2 wich is called Rambo: Ikari no Dasshutsu over there.
  • North & South is based on a Franco-Belgium comic called Les Tuniques Bleues (The Bluecoats).
  • Felix the Cat - Cartoon/Movie
  • I don't think it's based around the comic, cartoon, or movie, but Felix the Cat is another one. I don't think the storyline follows too closely to any of the other media, but I'm not really much of a Felix aficionado.

[ edit ] Dammit, beaten by four minutes. That's what I get for reading Wikipedia. >_<

Is it a licensed movie tie-in over there, or just a play on the name?

I don't know about that. Probably not.

Going by what the GAME ITSELF is based off of. Nice catch on the Batman games, thanks

Batman: Return of the Joker - Comic

Batman: The Video Game - Movie

    Batman Returns - Movie
  • Not seeing Aladdin or Lion King.

    Weren't those PAL only?

    Weren't those PAL only?

Yup. Smurfs as well. And Beauty and the Beast. Are those going to be counted?

  • Eh, I'll add them...I'm just trying to nail NTSC first but there's only a few PAL exclusives.

Then Asterix needs to be on there... the greatest comic of all time (serious, it's fantastic).

If I'm going to include PAL (which I will) then I'll need to ad...

Aladdin, Asterix, Beauty and the Beast, Knights of the Zodiac, Legend of Prince Valiant, Lion King, New Ghostbusters II, The Smurfs, and Trolls in Crazyland
  • Should add trolls on treasure island as well
  • Looks to be missing Popeye. Started as a comic strip.
  • Also missing felix the cat. Also a comic strip
  • Nice list!

I missed Popeye because I had it categorized under "Black Box" in my categories list. Thanks for the catch.

Updating the list right after this post.

Edit: Also, I can't believe I missed "The Incredible Crash Test Dummies"

Looks like the only addition is Best of the Best: Championship Karate....but the movie (Best of the Best) vs. the game (Best of the Best: Championship Karate) were released years apart and have similar, but still different titles.

I can say with confidence that this one is NOT related.
  • I had no idea most of the games on the list were based on other media, specifically cartoon and comic.
  • Dr Jekyll and mr Hyde a classic monster movie? I mean, sure it is, but it was a classic novel before that.
  • Seems like Maniac Mansion would fit in there somewhere. Wasn't it based off a TV show?
