Questions for our Canadian brethen.. See inside..

So I've been reading alot online lately about the Canadian Human Rights Commision, and how it is ruining a lot of free speech in Canada..  But yesterday Abou Hammaad Sulaiman Al-Hayiti was found not guilty, and I don't understand...  Clearly his book is hate speech, why would the CHRC find him not guilty?  Is there resentment in Canada over this?

Thanks....

  • Well there is a also a decently large population of Muslim immigrants (similar to France but much lower percentage of the general population) that might riot under the right conditions.
  • But what does that have to do with the government or CHRC being equal in its' rulings?

How does one person's hate speech differ from another's? I've read countless posts on it and I still don't understand the reasoning..
  • Damn Canadians...oh wait.
  • dont think the US isnt far behind on this issue. wait til Obama gets in office and all the left wing nuts start taking over.
  • don't scare me Doug...

Oh, I can't even imagine. It'll be so much worse with him than the previous eight years. I mean, shit, Bush just took away tons of Constitutional Rights from American citizens. But fuck, this guy just might insist that we all just get along or some liberal clap trap like that. Goddamn you Obama!!!

Of course with Bush being able to wiretap just about anyone in the country, you don't have to be afraid if you are a normal, God fearing, law-abiding citizen.

But hey, at least he'll have that one feller who hates all them queers at his inaugaration.  I mean, who the fuck do these queers think they are?  Wanting basic rights for themselves?  Shit, that is so selfish.  Didn't they realize that most Americans find that idea gross.  Except for course for lesbians, that would be hot.

    Seconded.

  • So any Canadian want to get this back on topic?  I'm just trying to understand your government, Anybody?

  • He wasn't found "not guilty", they refuse to hear complaints against him. Because, ahem:

  • Good luck trying to understand our government, though.

Haha, I had a good laugh at that.

Our government is a joke - quit while you're ahead. No one takes Canadian politics seriously here. In fact, take our last election: Our prime minister wanted to gain more seats so he held in an election. The "race" was only 37 days! and it had the lowest voter turn-out in Canadian history (like 52% or something). He won again, with a minority government. Now, his minority wants to overthrow him and because of this they've frozen our parliament or whatever, and basically we have no government now haha.

Canada + Politics = Makes me want to move to Mexico.
  • Haha, yeah. Here's the simple version: the budget/funding/economic issue(s) spurred the other parties to threaten a coalition, overthrowing Harper in the house with a vote of no-confidence. This caused Harper to yell about democracy or something since we didn't elect Dion and he was taking his truck (this is a metaphor for leaership of the country) or something, and so he asked the Governor-General (God bless the sovereign Queen Elizabeth II) to suspend parliament until Jan 26. So anyway, everybody gets to go home for the holidays. But then Dion was all FUCK THIS and stepped down. I'm still not sure why. And of the 3 people who could be elected (by the party, not the people) to take over, 2 dropped out of the race and now we have a new Liberal leader. So when parliament opens back up... there won't be a coalition? Also, the Conservatives seem to be changing all the stuff the other parties were freaking out about.

So at this point, I'm sure there's something fishy going on with the Liberals, the Conservatives have gone insane, there's some backroom deals going on and it's getting harder and harder to give a shit since Canadians don't have any say in how the country is run anyway.

It's basically like someone was going through the book of Canadian governing and highlighted all the parts that are totally stupid.
  • No wonder you guys take so much more interest in our political scene.
  • Following Canadian politics is an epic adventure. Sometimes you just want something that you can play for like 5 minutes.

Arch, I couldn't have said it better... I've noticed most Canadians are really interested in American politics but some don't even want to discuss theirs..
  • OSG, know of any good websites where I could read up on Canadian poltics?
  • Yeah, WTF is up with the whole queen thing? Didn't you guys fight some sort of bloody revolution to rid yourselves of that shit? Man, fuck the queen, fuck monarchy. That old hag should give back all the wealth her family has raped from the world over the last few centuries. I guess you Canadians just aren't as bad ass as us Americans. It's like we are the bad son that ran away to join the circus and you guys are the little goody two-shoes brother.
  • You should try being slightly more offensive, there are still some people from an English speaking nation that don't want to punch you in the dick.

    ALTERNATE RESPONSE

I didn't realize the circus was badass.

Not really, man. If you google news search some generic stuff like "Canadian prime minister" or something you'll probably be good.

Just to add to what OSG said.    We had an election just in the last month or two.   The Conservatives won a minority government (ie they have more seats than any other party, but still less than 50%).

The leader of the Conservatives (Harper) saw the timing as an opportunity... i.e. usually a minority government can get away with a lot right after the election, because the other parties aren't going to call an election and piss off the public.

So he put in an election funding proposal that would kill the subsidy given to all political parties.   Right now, for every vote a party gets, they get $1.75 towards funding.    The conservatives don't need it as they have good fundraising ability.    The other parties are underfunded and badly need the money.

His thinking was that if this went through the other parties would be permanently and significantly weakened, which they would have been.

But the other parties started taking steps towards forcing an election when they saw this threat coming.

Harper, about to have his government booted by way of no-confidence vote, asked the gov. general to dissolve parliament until january (stall tactic in order to use the time to work on public opinion).

  • Wow, Canadian politics sounds really complicated... How many major parties are there in Canada?
  • Major parties, I'd say 5 (could be wrong, like I said no one really cares about Canadian politics): Conservatives, Liberals, NDP, Green Party, and Quebec Sepratists.

From what I understand though, NDP & Liberals were merging. Once again, don't know very much.
  • then their is also the Independents who have no party I think 2 or 3 made it in? Independents are like say I wanted to become a member of parliment but didn't feel like being a member of any of the parties, So I campaign and everything against the big guys with parties and hope to hell I win. something over 300 members of parliment a minority would be anything under the 150 "seats"
