Wii battery options

So I bought my wife a Wii for her birthday, which was yesterday, and I've been reading online today about all of the options for rechargable batteries for the Wii.  I thought I would ask, what do you recommend for rechargable Wii batteries?

Should I buy a couple of sets of AA rechargables and swap out as needed, as I can recharge one set while playing with another?

Or should I buy one of those kits?

I'm leaning towards AA rechargables that I can swap out.  Thoughts, comments, recommendations, and any insight greatly appreciated.

Thanks y'all.

  • Do yourself a favor and buy a charge station. They work great and hold a charge for longer than I have ever played a game (which was a long ass time on Zelda and Metroid). They are like 29.99 I think for a charge stand that holds 2, it includes the batteries as well. I think mine is Nykon from Walmart.

  • Do you have to remove the jackets to charge?
  • yea, the jackets won't work with it at all. I just bought a skin for my Wii Motes so they look stylish and hold a charge. I had the jackets as well for a long time, but I quickly tired of dealing with them.

  • I can vouch for the Nykon charger as well. I have 2 sets and have never had an issue. I usually just have 2 controllers going at the same time so I just play them until the Wii tells me they are about to go out and then let them charge overnight. I don't ever use the jackets anymore either, good idea, but too much trouble for me. Some people put the remotes back on the charger after every use to make sure they are fully charged, but I really don't think that is necessary.

Here is an old thread where I asked the same thing a while back. Good responses there too.

  • I just use AA rechargeables. Then I can use them for other things if necessary.

If you get a good deal on dedicated battery packs, they might be a good option, though.
  • the nyko charger has been working great for me.  it has a blue light when you put it in so you can see that its charging, then turns green when its done.  the guy at the store told me not to buy the cheaper one (its brand name escpaes me at the moment) because there were "melting" problems.
the nyko is white and kind of looks like its part of the wii, where i believe most rechargeable battery stations are a little hard on the eyes (if you care about that sort of thing)

dont get it at walmart though, walmart sucks image

another thing, is with rechargeable batteries im guessing that you will have the remotes at "full power" a lot less often. with the nyko you just put it on when youre done gaming and its always topped off.
  • yeah i fifth the charger. holds a charge for days.
  • I just use these:

they last a real long time, even if you don't use them for awhile

  • Thanks for the input guys, I've had my wii for a couple of years, but recently I've been chewing through the alkaline batteries, so was thinking about one of these charging stations.
  • Go for the charging station for sure!

But cant you buy at least 4 rechargables for that price, if not more?
  • target sells a $28.99 version (I think by psyclone). There's also an option to get a single battery charger that plugs into the wii's usb port for $10. Only works for one wiimote.
  • rechargeable batteries will have their life slowly deteriorate the more you use them. I used them for the first year or so that I had my Wii. I just got a charging station for Christmas and wonder why I didn't do this earlier.
  • I use Sanyo Eneloop rechargables, not only in the Wii but in everything that uses AA or AAA in my house. They hold a great charge, are affordable, charge quickly, can be recharged over 1000 times.

I like these better than dedicated battery packs because you can swap them out readily instead of requiring you to stop playing and set your only battery packs on a station when the juice runs out. You can also use them in other devices. I highly recommend buying two sets of four if you have two wiimotes (4 active, 4 spare - thus always having fresh batteries available) and a 4-battery wall charger.
