Gym

current goal is to just become more physically fit ... i hope to increase both my speed and muscle mass ... we'll see how this goes or how long i stay on this ( i just need to eventually change this goal into a quantitative figure) ... i've achieved other goals before similar

2 years ago IE 2 months dropped 30 pounds - keep in mind i wasn't ever really fat that's going from 165 to 135 which is insanely hard

so I can do this I'm sure

  • 165 to 135 in 60 days is probably not healthy!!! dont make your goal into a #, because that number doesnt mean anything. your goal is to get laid. how do you accomplish that goal? work out, eat healthy, and work out some more. do some lifting and some cardio on your off days. your goal is to get laid... no numbers, unless you want to put a # on the amount of girls you want at the same time!
  • perhaps it was unhealthy ... i dunno i'm an extremist to some degree ... i do like your line of thinking though seth ... perhaps a new goal is in order!!!
  • Tuck in the GUT soldier!!
  • Yeah SRH is right, 165 to 135 in 60 days is completely unhealthy. You lost a lot of muscle in that process as a 200 lb individual can only burn about 1 or 2 pounds of PURE FAT in a week. The rest is either water or muscle mass...

Also as an FYI (for all practical purposes) you cannot increase muscle mass and lose fat at the same time. Increasing muscle mass is a anabolic process and losing fat is catabolic. In other words, it would be like trying to go right and left at the same time... impossible. There are actually a few tiny exception to the rule such as those on steroids or those with freak-like genetics (Arnold) but most people simply cannot.

Set a goal, either losing fat or building muscle and stick to it. Do that for 2 or 3 months and then switch it up. If you spent 3 months on building muscle and 3 months on cutting fat then you'd still be in great shape for the summer. If you try to build muscle and lose fat at the same time for 6 months, your results won't be nearly as impressive (although it would still be better than doing nothing).

  • That's funny. When I was in college I struggled to do the opposite, going from 135 to 165.
  • ^ Yeah I'm a hard gainer too and it sucks. I can eat fast food 3 times a day sit on my ass and play video games all day and barely gain weight at all.
  • Yup. The only time I was able to gain weight was when I was working out every day and eating at the dining hall (a dozen hard boiled eggs for breakfast, and all you can eat everything else).
  • If you put on muscle you will lose fat. key to everything is to eat. 135 how tall are you. I try to eat 6 meals a day when im seriously trying to gain strength. tuna, chicken, steak, protien, protien protien.

Not quite... you lose fat from either speed training or cardio, and you gain muscle mass with heavy reps and pushing your limits.

Although, by gaining muscle you will push your BF% down making you appear leaner.  Why?  If you weigh 135 now with 13.5 lbs of fat, then you have a BF% of exactly 10%.  Let's say you manage to gain 5 lbs of lean muscle and still only have 13.5 lbs of fat.  Now you are at 9.6% BF (13.5 / 140) and you'll appear leaner even though you have the same amount of fat...
  • Jonas - if you put on muscle, you WILL lose fat naturally because your resting calorie burn will increase due to needing to support the additional muscle mass.
  • Yes because your metabolism will increase but you won't lose that much fat. You aren't going to go from 200 lbs to 180 lbs just by hitting the weights and trying to gain as much muscle as possible.
  • Any calorie burning activity can result in weight loss, whether it's lifting weights or riding the bike.

Many people are completely sedentary, so any amount of activity will result in changes to their fat content.

    I hate you bastards.  :-p
  • My leanest was when I was strength training in college. I'd do a 20-minute warmup on the rowing machine, then I'd spend a full hour on the isometric circuit. 6 days, alternating legs/abs and chest/arms. I went from one machine to the next, taking 1-2 minute breaks in between, and 30-second rests between reps. When I'd start to gas about halfway through I'd just go to the mat and do crunches or stretch or something.

I'm 6' and my "lazy" body weight is about 230-240. In those days I was 177 and was in pretty lean'n'mean shape. I never jogged a mile, did calisthenics (do people even do those in the 2000's?) or anything but that warmup each day.

    This statement is EXACTLY correct!

Third this. When Im hardcore eating and lifting heavy I always drop a ton of fat. Muscle weighs more than fat so you are actually losing fat but gaining muscle
