e-Zine: NWC Champ Robin: Part II

Robin, what a fantastic conclusion to your article.  I thought it was cool that Thor and Kenny's dad persuaded Howard Phillips to give the finalists each a grey NWC cart.  You guys definitely deserved it.  Congrats again....that's amazing, in your age group you ended up in 3rd place in the finals.  That's awesome.  You got the Bronze medal, so to speak.  image   lol    Of course, you wanted to place first, but look at this way:  You're the 3rd greatest Nintendo player in the world for your age group at the end of 1990 and nobody can ever take that away from you.  That's an amazing accomplishment, and your name will always be immortalized and all the gaming geeks and Nintendo nerds in this world will always remember that fact.

I'm surprised at one thing:  that you guys were so unselfish at sharing gaming tips with others whom you were competing against.  Why did you share your knowledge, wouldn't that hurt your chances of winning it all?

One last thought,  dude, you should NEVER, EVER sell that NWC cart.  man....that thing must have so many memories for you.  You should keep it forever and pass it on to your kids some day.  It's too great of a momento for you to just sell to some NES collector.   I'm not trying to be all materialistic, but seriously, don't sell that cart...ever.

  • thanks a lot man. Just to clarify something, it was Thor's dad and Kenny's dad (I'm told) not Thor himself and Kenny's dad. I worded it wrong I think.
  • I seem to have read it as Thor's dad, so either it was worded correctly, or I read it wrong image

Great read Robin, I appreciate the time you took to write this article it was an awesome recount of not only the main event, but the regional tournaments leading up to it. It was cool to read another account of it also after reading Thor's a few months earlier.
  • do you mean his interview in the expo issue?  i just came across that yesterday.  good stuff.
  • just in case anyone was curious....

  • LOL....you put your NWC cart before your family....nice! image
  • Still in Portland Robin? I really enjoyed your articles. I've been an Oregonian my whole life (down in Eugene) and I had no clue the third place champ was from my home state. Great stuff.. I'd love it (and I am sure others would as well) if you could/would share some of your photos stories of the Capcom experience... unless that is for another issue. Thanks again for sharing.
  • Heh, one of my mates moved to Portland a few months ago...small world image
  • Great story, really enjoy reading it all.

    Kevin,

Hey I forgot to thank you man!  I'm sure you put a lot of work in to the E-zine as well.  One of the other pics people might want to see is the one of Jeff Falco.  I'll post that one soon.

Say Kevin, I've always wondered what the heck is Lando looking at so joyously in your photo?
  • ^ it is actually Apollo Creed teaching David Cross how to be a better actor... if i am not mistaken image
  • Oh ok.  i coulda sworn it was billy dee.  I love david cross.
Mr. Show was one of the best.
  • Hey Robin, I loved the article man. That would have been such an amazing experience to have as a young kid.

I'm surprised too man.  I'm not sure I would do that now.  One thing though, people following cities were so eager to see what their scores would be, that I don't see anyone being able to resist (the "current" Mario for instance).  I think when you're 13, you don't see the future quite as clearly as you think you do.

In the following contest (1991) there was some drama involving "sharing" techniques.   I ended up winning and some parents were not happy image

I would like to tell the story as well.  Right now I'm a little burnt out from writing the 1990 version, but will soon have the energy to do it again (probably shorter) .  I'm not sure where the pics are for Capcom at the moment.  I do have footage of the finals in Disneyland (minus the actual final game, the battery went out!)
I am also waiting to see if another article would be an option.
The NWC is only half of my NES story (so far image) and I'd hate for you guys to think I was gonna let that 3rd place finish keep me down!
You'll hear about it one way or another.  Maybe when I come to Eugene next time, I can show you the footage or something.
  • Anytime you'd like to contribute, Robin, we'll make the room. Thanks for everything you've done for the past two months, you've really gone above and beyond in sharing it all!
  • Awesome Dan.  I'll look for the photos and get back to you in a couple/few months.

here is my only picture of the famous Jeff Falco

  • Wow, those machines look amazing. Cool to see his name right above him. image
  • ROFL I totally forgot about the 'Jeff knows Tetris' hat. Classic Jeff. I loved that guy.

+1 to anyone who can recall what the hat's a "tip of the hat" to (and no, it's neither Jeff nor Tetris).

-1 if you suffer from an unfortunate case of Dick Schaap. It can be painful.
  • 1 of the specials they did on me on my local news station started..... "Sure Bo knows all that other stuff, but Robin Mihara knows Nintendo."
  • I hugely enjoyed part 1, Robin. Just wonderful stuff. Looks like I missed part 2 and maybe I'm just missing the link somewhere. I'd be very happy if someone could send it to me at my user name here at hotmail. Again, thanks, Robin. One of the best stories from the NWC I've seen so far.

NA is such an incredibly awesome site.  I really do need to spend more time here.  I can't believe I missed so much the last few months.
