Anybody Into Stargazing?(the sky, not celebrities)

Astronomy has always facinated me, and I read and soak up as much info I can about it.  I'd like to purchase an inexpensive telescope, but something nice enough to see lots of stuff.

Can anybody give me any advice?  Can I expect to get anything for $100.00, or is that asking too much?

  • I bought a telescope for my dad for Christmas this year. It was a pretty decent one. I think the cost was $150 or so, so I don't think your price range is totally out of the question.

While I was looking, I saw a telescope that you can hook to your computer so that you can up-res your image. Looked kinda neat.

When I head down to the cabin for summer weekends, there is no light pollution, and you can see so much. It's really quite incredible how much you can see once you get out of the city.

Usually we see about 10+ shooting stars an hour. I've also seen the International Space Station fly by too, not to mention all of the low level satellites.

I think your best bet is to look for a good used telescope. I'm sure there's lots of them out there, and you wont break the bank! No use paying $300 for a new telescope with 225x magnification when you can get a used 200x magnification one for $50...

  • I like astronomy a lot and I have a pretty nice telescope, but I have trouble finding the time to get outside with it.
  • Depending on how little light pollution your area has, you can actually start off OK with a really good set of binoculars. And they have secondary utility if you need to spot for a sniper image
  • Best views I have ever seen: In the mountains of Wyoming (Big Horns and the Wind River Range). When you get up above 7000ft in Wyoming with no pollution it is just amazing.
  • If I didn't live in a city I would definitely look at the stars more. Growing up in the country I would do it all the time.
  • The best s[ot I have ever seen was when I was in COlorado.  I could see galaxies with just my bare eyes.
  • you could probally find a local observatory that would let you look at the stars. would be a good view
