DS: Repair or replace

So here's my issue:  I own an old DS Phat (bought it the day they came out).  About 2-3 years ago, My DS took a nasty dive onto concrete and one of the hinges broke (the little one on the right).  It still worked, but the screen wiggled a bit (about a 5 degree angle).  Well, yesterday the top screen started to act up, freezing or turning white.  Today, the screen has to be at that angle before it'll work.  Looks like I need a new interface cable.  Based off some hong kong ebay prices, it'll cost me about $20 to repair it (new cable, shell, and tools).  I'm really tempted to just replace it with a DS lite but I know the new DSi is gonna be released sometime in 09 and I won't have enough to afford both.

So lets go with repair: Does anyone know of a cheaper place (besides hong kong or australia) that I can get what I need, is hong kong a trustworthy place to get parts, or should I just replace it with a lite?

and what color phat shell should I get?

  • I have heard the DSi is coming out in early March, I would just hold off till then and survive without a DS somehow.

  • ^^^ Good advice.

Bottom line is that if you can wait until the DSi comes out you either get the newest tech, or a much better price on the DS Lite (and retain the ability to play GBA games)
  • I may just buy the $1.00 cable and $10.00 tools that I need and repair it until then. My rumer well said the DSi was a lot later than March.
  • Are you willing to lose out on the GBA playablity with the DSi though?
  • I've got the old GBA(no backlight) and if I can repair the DS, no real need to replace it.
