  • The castle stuff I like but the space sets mtron/blacktron are sweet. I'm still searching for the sets I had
  • Well I caved. I was at Walmart and found a shitload of them, most you could tell people were rubbing the pack to see what one it was. I grabbed 7 from the bottom box, and got these. Pretty happy with the pulls, had a double of Chief Wiggum and Ralph. They're pretty cool, but the heads are rubber instead of plastic like the rest. Oh, and they're cheaper at Walmart, $3.49 each.

  • I hate intruding in on your thread guys, but you seem to be the people that might know (even though it's Mega Bloks, not Lego related). I recently picked this up, only to get home and find a piece of the stern is missing so I can't connect the back. I was just going to flip it, but now the question is if it is worth selling for parts, or should I just pitch it? I didn't really look in to it much, I believe it is "The Black Pearl" from Mega Bloks Pirates of The Caribbean series. Any input or suggestions appreciated!

  • This is a thread? I think I died and went to heaven!!
  • Glad someone else brought up Mega Bloks (however its spelled) because I've been meaning to ask what people thought of them. All I know is I've seen some crazy awesome stuff by them at the flea markets and I'm starting to think maybe I should dump my legos and get them.

I remember buying a bunch for my little brother back in the early 2000's when they had the dragon/viking sets.

We grew up with LEGO and the entire family collection is still at my parents' house, so we had them on hand for comparison.

Mega Bloks made a much earlier tendancy toward play sets and away from model sets.  Basically, the exotic pre-molded shapes were their hallmark (and still appear to be).

The plastic quality is distinctly inferior, though.

As soon as you buy a set, you immediately realize why they are cheaper than LEGO.

Not to say they don't have some pieces that are worth having in your collection, but overall they definitely are not as nice as LEGO.

Do yourself a favor and do not mix all the bags together. I did that and boy was that a mistake lol

Mistake is an understatement, that made it about a thousand times harder. Mine is currently in pieces, as it didn't survive my move.

Tell me about it! Sorry to hear yours didn't survive the move, but now you have another excuse to play with awesome Lego's

    Very true!

They are not as nice but I've seen the massive Mega Blockz box sets of things like the Death Star that are 1/4th the cost and look just as awesome.

So they are inferior, but are they 75% inferior?

I don't know exactly what %-inferiority I would ascribe to them, and I think it really varies by set.

But I would say pretty definitively, I wouldn't be willing to pay more than 25-30% the price of an equivalent part count of LEGO for a Mega Bloks set.

In terms of the massive sets, there are a combination of factors:

    (1) license --> if you like Star Wars or the properties licensed by LEGO, you are shit-out-of-luck with Mega Bloks

(the reverse if true if you'd rather have the strange assortment of licensed Mega Bloks products like Halo, Warcraft, etc)

    (2) build complexity --> the guys at LEGO have just been doing it longer and seem to come up with more interesting builds without needing to resort to custom molded parts (which seem to be a lot more prevalent with Mega Bloks)

    (3) component quality --> Mega Bloks definitely "feel" cheaper.  But the tradeoff is they have some interesting colors and pieces that LEGO doesn't make.

Some of it is just going to be about preference, because it doesn't matter how cheap you can buy the big sets of Mega Bloks, you aren't going to get a Mega Bloks Death Star or a Mega Bloks Executor, because they don't exist and they never will.

  • When I was a kid in the early 90's I would even allow Mega Blocks into my house. My kid-radar always said "second rate". I was definitely a bonafide Lego-maniac.

Edit:....actually I'm thinking of a different brand than Mega Bloks I think, though it sounded right....it was something else back then as a competetor. I can remember the identical bricks without the lettering on the bumps and the plastic was more lightweight...
  • I'm surprised I never put this in this thread but this was me back in February 1991 with set #6061 King's Mountain Fortress.

Mega Blocks are just so much worse. When you build with them you can feel the difference.

Arch is pretty much spot on about all of his points, but I want to reiterate build quality and complexity, MegaBlocks just isn't there. I know I could leave my Legos alone for 20 years in a box and come back to them and they would be good as new, I don't have that confidence in MB. I drank the Lego Kool-Aid and I am going to keep drinking, it's delicious

  • Mega Blocks aren't bad, and the price is a lot better than Lego, but they just feel cheaper. Lego has the formula for colorful buildable plastic down to a science.

And this is why i am keeping mine in the box until i move to Maryland! It's going to suck to wait, but i don't want that to happen.

. You are thinking of the neon colored bricks that were on home shopping network. Those kids in the commercial just looked sad that they didn't have real LEGO...

Its defintiely for the best lol

I have 5 sets to re assemble. Worth it though
  • Here is part of the custom Hogwarts I am working on. This Great Hall is much larger than any in the standard sets. My idea here is to take the last Hogwarts castle set 4842 and enlarge it and then add to it. It's a really good set it's just to small. I am currently working on the court yard that goes outside this piece and the Chamber of Secrets to go underneath (though that's techincally not the most accurate place for it). IF you scroll past Hogwarts you can see my Indiana Jones Lego Store Display

  • I could has sworn I saw a Deathstar megablokusz but perhaps not.

That Hogwarts is so rad and I don't even like Harry Potter.
  • Yeah those hogwarts sets are nice. I'm thinking of doing a castlevania set with those pieces hehe
  • Anyone here trade mini figures? I have dozens of doubles from most sets, including the new Simpsons one.

I might be willing to trade, I have some coming in the mail (simpsons set)

Post pics. I love seein huge displays of minifigz.
  • I grabbed some more this morning, got Nelson, Apu, Homer, and Bart, and a double of Itchy/Homer/Burns. My set is at 9/16.
  • So I have 14/16.

I need Mr Burns and Homer.

I have doubles of maggie, flanders, bart, itchy, scratchy, nelson, millhouse, chief wiggum
  • Finished my set:

I also have a ton of doubles. I might hang onto them until the garage sale here or slang them on ebay if I can't wait.

  • Lego should make display cases for their figure lines. I know they make some, but ones specific for each series would be cool. A little grand stand type thing in plastic to keep dust out.

I've run across some offbrand blocks not too long ago that would be interesting for anyone doing mech building. They go by the name of Kre-O, and they've licensed Transformers (the sets allow you to build a robot figure or vehicle, but don't actually transform-- much to my disappointment).
