Did home consoles kill the arcade games

I remember back in the 80s you found arcade games everywhere. restaruants, local stores, movie theaters etc. also there were lots of arcades. Im thinking the home console doomed the arcade games. I know there are some great games on great consoles but there was something different about arcade games

  • movie theaters and some places still keep a few games on hand but its just a way to score some extra money while people wait.

when i go down the beach theres plenty of arcades along the board walk but the biggest thing keeping me away is paying $2.50 to play some N64 era looking game that i could probably own off ebay for the price of one continue

the coolest thing ive seen in a accade recently was that star wars trilogr simulator. i'd love to have that at home. aside from that the only games youll catch me dropping money into are SNES/sega era games that still happen to be in the movie theater like mortal combat

  • Man - DreamTR, a few people and I were all having this convo on the NA chat a few days ago. In my city there are a few arcades but they arn't very busy at all, even though some of them have Street Fighter IV. It's just not a big thing anymore. However, in Japan it's the exact opposite. Arcades are the places to meet women, hang out, drink beer. Every night they were PACKED and they are everywhere. In my big city of Toronto there are 3 that I know of. In Japan, there would be 10 on one street, not even exaggerating and they were all busy.

Something in the water over there keeps people gaming image

  • yes, plus the "shady" characters that tend to hang around those places (where i live anyway).
  • Yes. Not just home consoles, but the fact that the home consoles finally caught up with arcades in the the graphic/sound/play quality departments. You had the NeoGeo back the early 90's which was the first home console to have arcade qualities about it, but it wasn't affordable to most.
  • ^^^ exactly. What's crazy is that the games for the Neo Geo cost about as much as most of the other home consoles themselves.
  • How is the Dave and Busters franchise doing? They were trying to bring back the arcade in kind of the way you mentioned, Freedman, like a more adult drinky-type place to meet. They seem to have enough money to get their name in UFC arenas lately.

The Dave and Busters in Philly does great.  Me and most of the people I know go there at least 3 or 4 times a year.
  • Around here there are 3 things that killed the arcades. #1 consoles that could dish out 16bits, #2 gang violence, and #3 the prices per game were all raised from 25 cents to like 75 cents so a dollar got you one game instead of 4 ;-( There was a golden age though. Hehe I remember Dain rockin guys at the airhockey tournaments we had at our local arcade.
  • Theres a arcade by my house called Nickle City

Most new arcade games are 6 nickles a piece

but they got all the retro games in the back and there set on free play

So i go there and play free games all day

    Its pretty Awesome.

    Thought i would share
  • We had an arcade in our mall around '96. But instead of going there the kids around my area just rented games. No need to go there when you could just rent a ported version of your favorite arcade game for your console.

Too bad though, I loved going there. Japan rules...
  • i miss arcades, games these days have great graphics but they r not like the arcade games that u can play for hours, u play it once and thats it
  • Blarky: VS Unisystem Nintendo games were the first to replicate arcade quality at home with the NES...those games were out well before the NES came out here....

arcades do ok, but you need more stuff added to them, and it helps if you have games that can NOT be played on console.
  • I always thought it was because arcade games went to crap
