Which repro makers use all new parts?

Does anyone know of repro makers here that use new parts instead of donors? I ask because there are some games I want, but whose donors are not the cheapest... I know JJrepro used to, and Chilant did too sometimes but he's sort of out of the race right now.

  • Bishop Bros on here does both. I wrote him about stuff not listed, said it would cost me +$10 to have a donor game put to a new board.
  • Oh okay, thanks for letting me know . I wasn't even aware they did SNES games, since all I saw was NES. I was hoping someone would do games with new parts for around $30, like JJrepro did, but I guess I can understand why they'd want an extra $10 for that.

But who knows, maybe someone knows of another repro maker that doesn't charge extra. I guess I shall see if/when others respond to this.
  • I doubt you will. The cost of the new boards is more expensive than chopping up some dollar title junk common.
  • IIRC JJrepro still used donors, but developed an add on board so they could use multiple eproms instead of TSOPs.

    Tanooki has it right though.

His snes boards are 20$ as a base. Take that, add in a shell, label, add in time consumed for assembly and shipping and you're pretty much over that 30$ mark.
  • You get what you pay for. I'd think a rational person would rather have a new board that's solidly built and new over 20 year old board with a bunch of solder and wires all over the place hotwiring another chip in there to bypass the original. I don't buy bootleg repros anymore unless they're new boards.
  • Ohh, I see. All I know is I saw "ooooh shiny!" contacts on the repros I got from JJ, so I assumed it was all new parts and such.

I definitely agree with you, there... I'd rather have the new board for a little extra. I had no idea the new boards were that expensive from the get-go. I'll have to contact Bishop Bros. and see about an order.

    Thanks for the responses, guys.
  • On JJRepro the boards were new but the chips were scrapped. What games were you looking for?

I haven't finalized a list yet, as I'm still researching what fan translations are good or not/what I might like, but...

    Zelda Outlands

    Super Metroid Z-Factor

Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets (I think there was talks of someone making these?)

Super Mario RPG Armageddon (this was the main one, as the donor was like Kirby's DL3 and other games like that)

    ^were my for sures.

    And then possibly:

Secret of Mana Extended (can anyone recommend this one? Is it an actual re-translation or just added dialogue, as some say?)

Chrono Trigger Re-Translated (though I heard this translation is too literal, so I might not go for it - and I'm not even sure people would make this one, though I know some did Breath of Fire 2 re-translated)

    Zelda Goddess of Wisdom

He only does NES stuff, so he can't help with me with the SNES games. Butttt, I think I might have to get myself a shiny new Final Fantasy 3 and Zelda Outlands .

  • Nathan, you can honestly make your own games if you want.

  • This topic got pretty interesting. I'm a fan of the Final Fantasy series and would like to get properly translated copies of 1 through 6 if I could. I heard Timewalk Games did an excellent job with carts, boxes, manuals, etc but that is no longer an option.

I wouldn't know where to start, and I don't have steady enough hands for soldering. Plus, not a huge amount of time .

From what I heard, translations for 4 - 6 on GBA are pretty good. And the fan translation for FF3 (NES) isn't too bad, at least in my opinion.

Plug and play buddy Purchase a kazzo for about $35 or so bucks and then the PCB's for NES and SNES have flash memory, so all you do is burn the ROM file right to it. No Soldering.

A great idea thanks. I like having a physical copy to with a nice box for display and any maps made. Manuals are nice to.

Would be nice to have a nice looking reproduction cart to play and some boxes for display.

I think UncleTusk here does boxes and manuals for some things. And if there are boxes you want that he doesn't have, I'm sure the community can work together to make one (if they haven't already) or get you one. I would love to delve into custom boxes for things if I could, but I'm a bit of a novice and have only done one custom label :-p.

Ohhh, that looks handy... Do you know if you can replace the rom files on the boards when you feel like it, or is it once and done? Or if there are any issues with it holding the saves or ROM file over time? I didn't see any reviews for it, so that's why I ask.

  • Think of it this way, my batteries for my games are still good after 10-20 years, so you should be fine with using duracell or energizer.

You can reflash as many times as the flash chip allows.

I guess I missed reading the part where it mentions that you can easily replace the CR-whatever batteries, haha. Oops!

It looks like a good option, thanks for letting me know about it .

AFAIK, this game is impossible to make with anything other than an SMRPG. That is why repro-makers buy up all the (J) SMRPG carts off eBay. You aren't going to find a "new board" version of this game - no one is going to build an SA1 from scratch.

Oh okay, thanks for the explanation .
