Stuff about my upcoming game - Super Insect Swatter
June 5, 2014 - 4:36 AM NA time
One last update before my exams... I implemented Right Nut's sprite cycling routine that makes my sprites flicker when there's more than 8 of 'em on one scanline. Also, added a better fly pattern and amde the ant move, to0. This little guy goes for your hand as he wants to bite it. I'll put up a video as soon as I get home.
Finally, when you swat an insect, a little tombstone appears and falls. Stay tuned for the video!

Video time!
Just had some more time to program these days., so this is what I've accomplished. Fixed an annoying glitch where the swatter wouldn't swat insects in the far left side of the screen. Oh, and I implemented a new routine that determines the indentity of an insect and makes it behave as such. However, as you can see in the video, it only works with the fly as of now. There may be another update in the following days but after that there probably won't be many updates because I have some exams More work, less programming

The insects now move. Here's a gif to give you an idea of how they move. Also, the swatter works and the score works too. Not really much stuff added to the game, except that the music is probably going to be way better than Beat 'em and eat 'em (I have something special music-wise - it's a surprise (rhyme not intended)). But that's another update for another day. Behold my GIF-making skills

After releasing Beat 'em and Eat 'em, I have a bigger game in the works for you guys. Basically, it's a game where you have to swat various insects for no reason at all, except for the more arcadey Picnic Defense mode that I want to implement in the game (where the objective is quite obvious). However, I won't have much time to program this month (mostly because of the exams) so don't expect the game to be out tomorrow... Besides that, I only set up the sprites (the bugs don't even move) and I'm still a bit of a beginner in 6502 Assembly so it may take ages to come (hopefully not). But hey, programming and releasing a real NES game has always been my dream so let's try to do this
When I have time, I may update this thread in order to show the latest stuff I programmed in the game (badly).
Also, do you like the idea? Any suggestions? Thanks for sharing your thoughts

The "super insect swatter" logo flashes! (Think Blaster Master logo)

You can probably see that I'm not a professional pixel artist Some of the graphics are probably going to change (especially the spider under the swatter. It looks quite ugly.)

LOL! I didn't even think about this. The idea came to me when I was swatting flies at my uncle's house in Czech Republic. But I probably had this in mind at some point lol, even though I've seen this minigame only once or twice before.
Fun Fact: I don't even own Mario Paint

Yea i wasn't quite sure if you had played this game before, sounded like you hadn't. Quite a fun game. Very satisfying to swat the bugs and the sound effects. Especially nice when you swat a bunch of bombs at once. And the countdown of remaining bugs is very satisfying too. Simple but effective.

The project is cool! I think the graphics, even if not professional, aren't bad: they are simple and minimal, but have an original style, are fun looking, and you can understand pretty well which bug is each. I had a couple of minutes to spend, so, trying to keep your style and your palette, if this can help:
feel free to add it.
Cheers!

Thanks! It looks nice.
"Thanks! It looks nice."
No problem at all, just a couple of minutes of time.
Also, I dare to give you a suggestion, just my opinion: if you are going to have more than one level, I would change background colors (and maybe also patterns) between levels. The white-red squares are ok, nothing wrong with them, but after 20 minutes of playing or so, maybe the eyes can start get tired of them. Just my two cents.
Cheers!

Don't worry, I already planned to do this. I'll make other backgrounds (such as a window, a wall and other backgrounds)

Ah ah! Cool idea. Fun improvement.
By the way, it seems like you are already almost done with the game engine development.
Cheers!

Well, most of the basic features are already implemented. I still have to finish most insects' behaviour and some other thing such as making the insects actually hurt you.
