Willem 6.0 issues

I bought a willem programmer off of eBay the other day and I can't get it working. The documentation included with it is in broken english and everything I've found on Google isn't helping.



I have it connected via LPT and powered by a 12v power adapter. The EPROMs I'm using are 27C512 and 27C010A. 



Neither of these will program the CHR/PRG files from a Recca rom hack. The software says they are empty so I try to program them and it fails with an error immediately that says "Error at 0x000000 chip = 0xFF buffer = 0xXX"ddd



I then try to read the chip and the buffer is empty, but it says the chip is not empty. I erased them with my UV eraser several times now with different jumper combinations. I don't know why it's not working. I have only worked with PIC before, this is the first time with EPROMs.

    Colud be broken eprom. Did you have any other chips to test with?

    i had this same error when i first got mine (pcb5.0c) i had to install some drivers. there is an explanation on this page http://callanbrown.com/index.php/advanced-mmc3-nes-reproduction specifically the instructions you need are about halfway down the page step #8a. hope that fixes it for ya.

    I've installed everything from that page and it still doesn't work. Now when I try to program the CHR.bin to the chip, it completes 100% but it's still empty in the buffer after reading it and the blank check says it's empty. These chips were bought new.

    I've heard bad things about those cheap (sorry to assume that's what it is) Willems, it really seems to be a case of getting what you pay for. The problem is that the technology is basically obsolete now AFAIK, so you just get cheap Chinese variants that don't work very well.



    Sorry I can't offer any more help, maybe someone more knowledgeable will have a new programmer recommendation for you.

    Why does everyone use Willems? I purchased a Wellon 390vp and the thing works flawlessly. Never a bad burn. But as with OP's problem it might be bad eproms. I ordered about 100 eproms from China and generally the more beat up they look the less often they are to work. All 10 of my 27C040's were dead except for one.

    It's all I had the money for at the time. As I said, the 27C512s were bought new, from a US seller. The 27C101s were pulled from a working arcade board that I had so I know that it was working. I also have some other types and they won't program either.

    How long are you leaving them in the UV eraser for?

    The Willem devices aren't exactly newbie friendly, have you thought about something like a TOp853, they are pretty cheap to.

    At least an hour. They are coming up as erased.

    Like I said, the documentation is in broken english and mostly not there so I don't know what all the jumpers are for. I read somewhere that you have to change a certain jumper to match the version of the software you are using, but they have no information on which jumper is which. I've used plenty of JDM programmers before so this Willem programmer is nothing too out of the box for me. I have the DIP switches set to the right setting. Believe me, I've tried everything that I could find information on to get this working but it just refuses to. I've tried 3 different types of EPROMs from three different sources and none will successfully program. 



    And yes to your suggestion. I was originally going to buy a GQ-4X but went with this instead because I won an auction for it, new for only $30.

    Do you have the correct eprom selected in the software?

    Yes of course. I'm using Recca Pure. Doesn't matter what ROM I try it doesn't work. I can't program any file to it.
