  • @ beliskner true but still gives him no excuse "if" and that's a big "if" he is a collector as he knew what he is collecting and not just amassing a collection for the sake of penis measuring j/k. So here is some anecdotal example Does flatwalrus who had at one time a massive mega drive collection which for the most part mostly Japanese did he not know what he was collecting? As for me I know I won't play about a majority of my games but I sure in hell can tell you about every game that I collect with some useful history and background regardless of what region the game comes from. How about you beliskner I'm sure that you are more than knowledgeable in collecting PS and PS3 games right?

@ JumpingRyle yeah I agree with your opinion that one who is "serious" and too a extent hardcore haha into video game collecting he or should at the very least know what he or she is collecting. Then again like I previously said different strokes for different folks .

I definitely know a lot about my PS3 games and I'd say games in general even because I spend a lot of my time reading about stuff and just expand my knowledge whenever I have the opportunity and I'm sure a lot if not most people who are really into this hobby do. I guess if your collection gets like really gigantic you start to lose track a bit. I have over 2000 games now and until recently you could have pointed at any game in my collection and I could have told you where, when and for how much money I bought it and also what the game is without a problem. However there is only so much stuff you can remember and if it's not a collection I actively go for at the moment I sometimes have to look at my shelf to see if I actually have that PS2 or Game Boy game or not and I'm sure and I spend a lot of time collecting these games while a guy like Joel Hopkins probably spends a lot more time at his job and with his other hobbies.

Also what do you mean by "if he's a collector"? Even if you're super rich you probably wouldn't amass a collection like that just for the lulz or just for being hot shit. If he would try that he'd just focus on cars I think.

Of course I'm not saying it wouldn't be better if he knew more about the video games he is collecting but as I said he seems like a nice guy who enjoys his collection and plays the games even though he might not spend as much time with it as some others do
  • Anyone wondering about that Australian guy in Melbourne who has a seemingly endless supply to money knowing much about his games. I use to be subbed to his channel well over a year ago and I am pretty sure from memory he use to work in the video game industry back in the day and and a result has some decent connections which have helped him acquire what he has. So I think he does know quite a bit about what he has. Obviously though with that amount of games it is almost impossible to have played and know everything about every single one. With all his other hobbies he wouldn't have the time, as you saw in that video the guy is too busy to even mow his lawn, ha ha. Everyone always asks what he does for a living but I don't think anyone knows. To own all that stuff especially with the cars it would either have to be lotto, inheritance or he has an extremely successful business. He does get a lot of hate which most of it would come from jealousy. I would be lying if I said I didn't hate him a little purely because I wish I had that much money, but he does seem like a down to earth decent guy.
  • Turns out the guy is a "game design professor"

I myself am a professor of funk.
  • Nice makes sense now with all those games. As for the professor of funk any funk essentials songs that I should be aware of?

Over $90,000 and reserve still not met. Who else has a feeling that this is just shill bidding to see how high the reserve goes?

Don't be surprised it hasn't met the reserve at 90k as I am willing to bet the reserve is over a quarter of a million. Unless he is willing to settle for far less than what he or others have evaluated it at due to unforeseen circumstances it won't be meeting the reserve price in this auction.
  • I liked seeing the collection from that Australian guy...it seemed to be clean, nicely organized (or it could be nicely organized, if it wasn't). Looked like books on a bookshelf, basically a library. And that is the dream of how I want my game collections to look some day, sort of like a museum archive or something.

Also, Australians just have such bad ass accents when they speak

For the collection from the "world record" guy, I'm honestly not too impressed. There is a lot of rare stuff in there, but a lot of the rares are also missing, at least on the Nintendo side of things.

It is derived from the country who invented the language and bares more resemblance to it than most other English speaking countries or English accents. The guy in that video has a VERY strong Australian accent though, he is Caucasian but speaks a bit like a wog. It's funny as my wife who is an American was only commenting today how after living here for 12 years now finds American accents very annoying. I don't find any accent annoying, just the people who speak them are annoying, ha ha.

He speaks like a wog? Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you mean by that.

I enjoy Australian, New Zealand, and South African English accents.  British accents are annoying imo, and make me feel inferior or something, whereas American accents are annoyng in their own way.

That's weird, never had anyone say they feel that way about our accents, have you ever heard a Birmingham accent?

  • ^ link doesn't work.
  • Holy crap, current bid is $750,250.00. Going by what it was valuated at by an external person and the owner that means it will sell if the winning bidder is legitimate. It is VERY hard to believe though that whoever wins at that price or higher will actually be able to pay. With 3 days to go it has the potential to get really close to a million bucks. Who is willing to bet it ain't really going to sell for that much, crazier stuff has happened I guess.
  • The bids are fake. Look at the bid history and you can see that two bidders with zero feedback have bid it up from $100,000. And before that it was almost all zero feedback bidders. Of course, nobody uses GameGavel that I know of so maybe people are just signing up for it, but the bidding pattern of the top two is too suspicious.
  • Those bids must be bull shit. $750K is simply absurd. It's not even worth more than $200-250K at top dollar. The entire collection is bargain bin filler sans a select few and could easily be pieced together over a year or two for even less. Those bidders are probably just people who saw it on Yahoo or the Tonight Show and want to be "cool" by fucking with it.
  • It reminds me of the NWC that was for sale 5-6 months ago or so. It got some serious publicity and all the sudden handfulls of BS bidders showed up and just jacked up the bids. I bet none of those bids are going to be legit and he is going to have to relist it.
  • Yeah this has to be bullshit. Seriously those sets aren't complete and as Space Flea pointed out he is missing the big titles for nearly every system

I also check his complete set lists, and several of them are not complete, now I understand Complete Set means different things to different people but I'd really like to know the standards in which he deems his Sega CD and Saturn Collection complete.
  • The auction is over. It didn't go beyond the (fake?) bid it had been at for a few days: $750,250.00
  • Once upon a time I used gamegavel to obtain a scd championship soccer cib for $20
  • I'm surprised anything good has come out of Gamegavel, Shai'tan. Everytime I've gone there the prices are above any other site.

I've asked other places but no one can seem to tell me if the buyer has paid.

  • He has not per the seller at DP.

These grand scale highly publiized sales never seem to get completed once the cameras are off.
