My Custom Zelda NES go boom!

The winner of my last Zelda NES was from Finland. He sent me this message today -

Dear customnesguy,

hello again!

i got NES and it was good condition, thanks! But god damn: Didn't noticed that here in FInland are diffirent Voltages, and i plugged my NES to power outlet, then Adapter said BOOM image So i couldn't tested it.. hmm but i hope that NES is still perfect working condition, but adapter is surely broken now... dont know to fix NES if it is broken :& But i ordered Voltage Converter already, so i need to get new power adapter OR what do you think, can i use FINNISH power adaptor with my USA NES ?

I know its a shame.image You guys think the NES is fried? What do you have to have to convert it to the right voltage over there? I assumed there was something you could buy that would do the trick. I assumed he should have known that already.

  • He may have lucked out and had the exploding power adapter save his ass.
  • Does the motherboard could be changed with a working PAL one ? Are they the same size ?
  • It was one of those new 3in1 A/C adapters.
  • Ouch. Hopefully the system is ok. It would be a shame to have destroyed a wonderfull piece of art image
  • He needed the proper converter, which cost less than $10. Ask him to buy another ac adaptor and try it with US-EU converter, and hope the NES is not fried...
  • I can ensure you that a adapter will set him back at least 25$, he lives in Finland after all image
  • I just wonder how he couldn't know that while buying?
  • I have 2 US NESses at home and they don't blow up using the european AC adapter. I think it's logical. But what I don't understand is that they have the same plugs in Finland as in the US with different voltages. I think he should try his European AC adapter.
  • when you open up a NES this is basically all thats inside. in the red box i believe is a voltage regulater type thing that converts the incomming AC voltage to DC and also steps it down from about 9 AC volts to 5 DC volts. and inside the big plug in the wall theres a step down transformer that converts the 180AC volts comming out of the socket to 9 AC volts

at the very worst i cant imagine anything other then the thing i have circled going bad and anyone half decent with a soddering iron can do the 3 prongs in a matter of mins and while hes in there, if he clips the correct pin off the lockout chip he should be able to play the euro games as well

  • or just have him swap out the case and but in a PAL NES image

  • He says he doesnt know how to work on it.
  • i wonder if it just instantly went or if it took a while to heat up and blow?

id get a new adapter and just go from there
  • Im sure it was an instant blow. He said he was going to get another adapter.
  • I would imagine that its just the voltage regulator that blew maybe on or 2 Capacitors... hard to say.

reminds me of something that happend to me a while ago. I was at work and we use cordless drills and rechargeable flashlights like those 3 million candle watts one, Anyways the cordless drill I was using was 18 volts and the flashlight was 12 volts. both drill and flashlight dc adaptors looked pretty much the same and inevitably the 2 got switched. the flashlight got plugged into the drills power supply 1/2 hour later I happend to touch the flashlight and it was HOT of course I un plugged it and the light worked great I mean brighter then ever but after 20 minutes of using it, it Died even trying the old power supply didn't do a thing...still dead right now.
  • As long as the Finnish power adapter he speaks of in his e-mail outputs 9 V AC at 1.3 amps, he should be able to use that and be fine (assuming nothing is fried on the inside) image .
  • If I was home when the auction ended it was so mine but I was at a family function. I think his best bet is to swap it over
