Whats the possibility?...or rather probability?
Of a peer-to-peer connect/online ability to have the NES console host or support connections to other NES consoles.
Here's an imaginary perspective.
Link...after smashing Zelda in bed, decides to make himself a protein shake and cool off with some Battletoads on the NES.
-Selects 2Player mode
-window pops up searching for online players
-Sees Player G4N0ND0RF85.
-Selects player.
-Window pops up initializing peer to peer connect.
Nes Multiplayer Etiquite - (Jump Jump = Hi...other random movements equal other basic forms of communication) *G4N0ND0RF85 says Hi
-Link jumps into action with his new comrade
-Looks at name
-puts on troll face
-decides to beat and take away all of G4N0ND0RF85's lives
-Rage quits.
After a good laugh and the last sip of Link's proteinshake...he decides to continue to smash Zelda in the bedroom.
Now I wanted to make this abit more entertaining seeing as how this is my first post...but I wanted to also give a somewhat clear imagination of how this project would work on the nes. Now I have not really looked into the underneath supposed expansion dock station on the console, and was wondering if anyone has found a way utilize it? Or if it can be used to create somekind of ethernet connection.
Has anyone else considered this dream of making a multiplayer network for NES?
OR am I just shitposting?

As for the actual question of online play, it has been asked and questioned many times and it is largely infeasible. There are a couple hardware driven possibilities people have designed, but there's always some sort of catch, like hacked ROMs to facilitate the necessary data transmission or significant hardware modifications. It's far easier to just load up an NES emulator with netplay support and play that way.
In case anyone asks, the reason why emulators make netplay easy is because emulators are not exact copies of their target hardware, they have to make shortcuts and approximations in order to run at playable speeds. Thus, it is very simple to further deviate from original hardware where needed to add in netplay functionality.
New homebrews could use upcoming hardware for multiplayer, but that isn't likely for a few more years.
