I finally upgraded to a GQ-4X and it's given me nothing but problems

So, for the longest time I've used the Willem whatever-the-hell that uses the parallel port for NES repros and it works just fine for me. I want to get into Genesis and SNES repros so I splurged at got what it seemed most people used. GQ-4X and also got that 42pin adapter for Genesis games.

Day 1, it wouldn't install, no matter what I did. I found, later, it wouldn't work on my laptop as it's too new. I did finally get it to install and recognize what it is when I have it plugged in on my other computer. Fine.

First try, I got a write error about 25% of the way through. Someone suggested I try writing at a slower speed.

second try, slower speed crashes at around the same spot. Someone else suggested I try an AC power source.

Now, before I try again with AC to help out, now my GQ-4X won't read the adapter. I try a blank check and it gives an error. Even when there's no chip in.

Any ideas? Or would it be better to try that Top3000?

  • Mine was giving write error, after I changed out the ZIF socket it works a lot better but still not perfect.

27C801 chips give me no problems

29F032 I cannot write with the DIP36 adapter I had to buy the TSOP adapter from Willem and normally have to switch to 3.3v to verify the chips. Although the other day 1 of them did verify on 5v.

MX29L3211 Will write but not verify after about 50%, but I was able to boot a chip with Kirby Dream Land 3 so I guess it worked.
  • what eproms were you burning ? SNES 27c801s or the Genesis 27c160s or 322s ?

i started with the nes/snes type eproms on my GQ-4X and everything was cake ... it wasnt until i wanted to do Sega Stuff, I got the 16bit adapter and i started to run in to issues.

out of the first 10 27c160s i got only 8 worked. and the ones that didnt work, did the same thing they just failed randomly during writing. erase them ... they would die right at the same spot no matter what speed i used. it seems like every order of 10 i get at least 1 is bad.

also it cant do a few things like it can do with the 8 bit chips .. i cant get mine to ID, just says unsupported.

so id suggest try some other type of 8 bit chips (27801s or 27010s something like that) that do not require that adapter and see what happens. if you have problems with those the whole programmer might be messed up.

but who knows the eproms you have could be bad or the adapter might be messed up. i got mine directly from mcumall ebay site for like $35
