  • It is kind of a pain in the ass, cleaning lego bricks gets old...really old. Bulk Lego becomes more of a headache than the profit is worth, to me at least. The current thing to do in Lego circles seems to be stalking the big box retailers for clearance, then flipping those for profit a few months later. Stripping the minifigs to sell seperately from the set is pretty popular as well. Generally, the common color standard bricks don't really bring in the big money as builders prefer the more lifelike colors for big MOCs.

Lego is really fun to collect, I stopped selling it because it just sucked the fun out of it for me. I still have some boxed sets I need to clear out, sounds like the makings of a garage sale thread!

I see what you mean. Today i got a deep bucket full. Paid 50 bucks. Went through it when i met them. There are some mega block stuff thrown in so ill have to be careful going through it. But there are a few 8-10 dollar specialty pieces i found just skimming around the top so i can see this being a pretty good investment. Also found a few castle walls just sitting on top. I imagine those in a lot should move.

Like games, Legos around the California bay area get absurdly expensive. When I picked up a tub a while ago I started trying to buy more and by asking around I got a more clear view of the price around here. A small sandwhich bag, maybe a quarter pound, WILL sell for $20. Maybe the bags had the rare parts but they looked like standard legos to me.

Large tubs, 10 to 20 pounds, will have sellers asking $400 to $800 and I've seen them sell disturbingly fast. I've heard sellers ask over $1000 for a large tub and they've disappeared on the same day....

Any tips?

When talking tubs of random/assort legos, it's typical to buy by the pound. I'm not sure if you plan on sorting it after, but you can get around $15-$20 per pound.

I thought $8 to $10 per lb was more of the going rate? Of course there could be regional differences when pricing this sort of thing. I typically don't pay anything more than $15-20 for anything loose, period, because of the hours and hours of organization involved. I do it to get the parts I need and I might pull $50-60 profit when all is said and done. Every once in a while I might get lucky and complete a set, but a lot of times I'll end up with partials missing figs that aren't worth while waiting on a marriage for.

Before starting this thread i was reading about it. People for the last 10 years or so have been hoarding sets with exclusives. But im not really into spending tons of money for sets. Id have to get them cheap unless i buy them when they are still on the shelf. Im only nervous of buying tibs because it will take some time but i want it to be atleast semi lucrative. As you know i mainly sell game stuff but im broadening to other fields slowly and this one has my attemtion at the moment and ive already got some hits on my ad for them.

You could probably do well on the high-end sets by picking them up right as they go out of print; I've seen some of the modulars and the Pirates of the Carribean ships shift up from the $100-150 range to about $350 or so.

That is nuts; around here $12 per pound would be pushing it as the crazy, rip-off reseller price. For my next batch, I'll probably push it up to $9--though I usually include a good mix of minifigs and partials to make my lots more attractive.

  • I used to be big on Pirate Legos when I was younger. Should have kept them around so I could have a proper pirates vs ninjas setup.
  • Hey if anyone has any minifigs from any of the series (1-12 lego movie) that the want to sell, hit me up!

The new minifigs series 13 are coming out in october.
  • Wanted to show ya guys these

    image

I was 3/4 for the minifgs from sdcc

    image

But I used Unikitty to get this badboy

    image

The 3 sets for this years sdcc where impossible to get ( unless you were a exhibitor)

Sadly unless I get another batmobile , I'm not opening this one
  • Were you able to get those from the raffle or did you buy them after the fact?
  • I got them from the raffle - the minifig that I missed was the one in actually wanted ( batman )

So I have the 1st two available still which I'll probably get rid of trade/sale
  • You were pretty lucky to get 3 out of 4! I didn't even bother trying to get them when i went because the line was huge.
  • Dude! We should've lined up together.

I posted about sdcc but no1 really replied

I tried to get the lego store exclusives but 3 times it was pointless. I even sneaked into the hall on Sunday with my pro badge lol
  • If i was there i would have! I couldn't make it this year because i recently moved from Cali, otherwise i would have tried to meet up with anyone that had posted in your thread if they had wanted to.
  • So jelly, I really want that Batmobile and Bard.
  • The guardian of the galaxy - rocket raccoon set is great

That's the other set I would get

These minifigs now range from 100-300. Batman is the one the caps high, the collector is second while Unikitty and bard are tied
  • New star wars sets out today on lego.com. Looking forward to star wars rebels show coming out this fall. They updated some mid 2000s sets star destroyer and added some sw rebels ships. Got my eye on that new cantina scene.
  • I love Legos but I usually end up destroying what I build like an hour later. Hahah. My brother owns the legos but I used to love playing with them. He has 3 of these boxes full of legos in his closet. I'm quite jealous to say the least. The best thing I ever built as a kid was the three starters for Pokemon first gen. xD But of course I destroyed them like a few hours later.

  • Last year I got Bilbo and mini Bag End. After opening it I noticed nothing on it was exclusive but the box so I made 5 of them, bought a few Bilbo's and added them into a few friends Xmas presents. I wonder if the Batmobile is the same? Azog showed up in a set a year later, so I wonder if Bard in the same outfit will be available the same way.

    image
  • Only thing I know is that the outfits do change

And yes like games, the packaging is what matters with these sets

I actually still have the bilbo sdcc2013 set sealed. ( another set I'll probably sell hehe )
  • As a hobby people think nintendo is bad? Lego collectors or fans are vultures. Its way worse. They had a sale on sone new star wars sets today. 5 sets for 309.99. Retail for 389.99 separate. Well they sold out in less than 10 hours. Probably way faster but thats when i checked. Now they are matked sold out with a later restocking date but the price is back up to full retail.
  • I grabbed the AT-AT and Snowspeeder sets at Toys R Us, theres 4 or 5 that I want but I didn't want to spend $500 today.

I saw that classic Star Wars bundle on the website, no surprise it sold out, pretty damn good deal.

I agree about Lego fans being hardcore, whenever something comes up for a good deal it's gone fast. They had a sale where you got a set of like 4 classic figures if you spent so much money, they were gone within an hour. Not as bad as trying to get LE games, but still pretty cut throat.

What changes did they make to the AT-AT. My guess is its a sturdier build. I built the newest milleniium falcon. So much better than the previous models.

I really like the look of the new MTT Droid carrier they came out with. Big improvements in appearance on that set.

I don't have the original ones so I don't know the changes, but it's my favourite vehicle so i've been waiting to get one for a few years. I only like getting sets from the original trilogy, but i'll get the odd prequel set if it looks cool.

one was motorized which was pretty cool. Those are kind of expensive now. Was shocked at how much the collectors series millenium falcon goes for. People getting 2-3k for those. They were 500 originally. I wish Id have bought a dozen of those when they came out.
  • There was another forum i was on for a while, brickpicker.com, and those guys look at Lego sets as investments and refer to what they buy as their portfolio. It's really bizarre to see toys called investments, but when Lego sets go for a lot of money after it's retired then i guess it would make sense to stock up on them and buy a whole bunch. That's probably what happened today, they saw the deal, posted it and then they all bought the max amount they could with all their different accounts.

That's the whole point! These people buying for their "portfolio" are chumps. They will never know the joy of building something for 5 hours then spending 5 minutes destroying it only to build something else that will eventually be obliterated.
  • Finished building my AT-AT, pretty sweet build, I started around 7 and just finished. Snowspeeder is pretty cool, wish it had a bit more color.

  • Love those starwars kits, even though I would never buy them myself. I do have a ton of star wars minfigs if anyone wanted to trade.

Im pretty sure they by legos for themselves too and for their kids to play with. Why is the stigma everyone has that if you buy and flip you dont enjoy and have what you sell as well.

Anyways, Yet they get the last laugh as they annually gross 10-15 percent a year selling old sets in there inventory. Thats better than the stock market. They are pretty smart and savy. In 2007 if you would have bought 5 of the 499.99 millenium falcon collector editions, 5 years later they were 4-5 times the value and now closer to 6 times. So 2500 investment 5 years later would have been 10k and would now be closer to 15000. They operate on a bigger scale though than just that. I was reading an old article and the one guy said he will have his entire kids college cost covered by legos.

I was going to buy sets to start flipping them but i don't have the space for it. I also wasn't going to be buying in the amount that those dudes on there do, it was going to be just for extra side money, but some of the cash they throw around buying sets is ridiculous.
