I've also wondered about the "limited edition" mark on this box. What is limited about it? I've never seen it for sale without the limited edition mark.
Sorry to jack this thread but I recently bought a Cowboy Kid box that has a yellow NINTENDO sticker on the front left corner at a diaoginal.Does anyone else have one like it?
I would image that the offer in the bottom right corner wasn't going to be available forever. Some might say an offer for a limited time only. If this game had sold well enough to allow for more to be made at a later date past the expiration of the sweepstakes, I'm pretty confident that they would have rereleased the game without the bottom right offer on the box and the limited edition notation on the top left.
Limbofunk, I think you're looking into it a little too deeply, even before they attached dates to sports games, they still had a limited shelf-life, and would continuously need to be re-released with new players to reflect the current "state of the game" (i.e. Evert/Lendl, Quarterback, etc). Even with games that had generic characters, once other newer games were released it dated them immediately as being last-year's-property.
It just amounts to, they knew they'd only be offering it for a year at the most, and decided to invoke some marketing techniques.
Limited Edition = "Call to Action" - buy now or the window of opportunity closes
Sweepstakes = "Value-added promotion" - In addition to a great game you get a possible or guaranteed bonus of some sort
Powerful techniques because they really don't cost anything. Who knows if the Treasure Master or the Color Dreams prizes were ever awarded
