SNES - What do I use to play PAL games on my system?

Can anyone help me out here? I know there are adapters out there for snes like the honey bee is for nes, but i dont know what they are called.  Also, what do they typically sell for? Help me out!

  • someone help me here! i want to get this terranigma into my snes!
  • pm sent Sethy Sethington.
  • im also curious about this.
  • did not work, curtis... need some sort of adapter... any help?
  • To play Terranigma on an NTSC SNES you need something more than just a Game Genie. I've read about something called Game Key 2 and 3 which apparently the game will work using that. Terranimga is probably the hardest game to get playing on an NTSC machine. It might even be a cheaper option to just get a PAL SNES, as the Game Key 3 can fetch up to $50 at times.
  • ooh ooh ooh, thanks so much... i will search ebay for one of those things! i dont want a pal system i would rather have the adapter thing!

edit: none on the bay! damnit!
  • There was a thread on GameTZ a while back concerning this, hopefully it will help you:

  • Use a Game Genie, Seth.

I almost forgot to say that you have to break the little plastic tabs near the pins off first so the cart will fit. For $5, it is a great convertor. It works for Japanese games as well.

  • Game Genie won't work, presumably because Terranigma has the 2 extra pin slots. Mega Man X has them as well, but will still work with a GG, which makes one wonder what the point of the extra pins slots are actually for...
  • Are you positive about that because I could swear I heard somebody say they could use it for Terranigma.
  • Not positive (I've never owned a Terranigma myself), but pretty sure.
  • have you thought about using an FC Twin with the top off so that the cart fits??? obviously they would not have put the lockout chip capabilities in that thing .... or mail it to me seth and put return postage back and i'll test it for you
  • is an fc twin a system? i definitely dont want to get another system to use, so i want some sort of converter. i was reading online tonight and there is something called the pro action replay... does anyone know if that would work?

there have been a few different types of them on ebay, so i dont know which one would work and which wouldnt. or even if any of them will work!!! haha.
  • yeah i heard about those too ... only they are EXPENSIVE and near IMPOSSIBLE to find ... something about version 3 being the best ... i dunno ask mb about it ... i think he might have one
  • thanks ant, i will talk to mb! they arent too expensive. the different versions have gone between 50-100, but i dont know what version is 2 or 3 or whatever. i didnt see any numbers on them. i have a few other SFC games and PAL snes games too that i never really had an interest in playing, but if i could get some sort of converter, i could at least try them out!
  • I hope this helps - I use this adapters to play NTSC and NTSC-J games on my PAL - SNES (i also own a super famicom and an NTSC SNES but I don't have the power adapter for NTSC so I can't test if it realy works on NTSC-SNES - but if it works on PAL SNES and Super Famicom I think it will work on NTSC-SNES.

You must put a NTSC cartrige in slot A and the cartrige u want to run in slot B - the adapter fits in the SNES (ntsc) and you power it up and play image. The names for this are:

    1. DIS-SFCO2 SFX Converter
    2. AD-29 Universal Adapter
    3. Fire

Later edit - I just remembered that I got this one

  • The Pro Action Replay 3 is what you need to be able to play Terranigma on an NTSC SNES. It doesn't work with a Pro Action Replay 2 (I've tried...I own Terranigma and a PAR 2). The PAR 3 cartridge is a little taller than a standard PAL SNES cartridge, with a toggle switch at the right, and cart slots at the top (game you want to play) and back (game that matches the region of the system you're playing on). You'll be able to note the difference by looking at the label. If it says "Pro Action Replay MK3" on the label, you're good to go. Though what has been said about pricing and availability is also true: they're quite difficult to find (about on the order of a complete NES Mario's Time Machine, for reference), and can command anywhere from $40-$70 loose (upwards of $100 complete...I've seen as high as $125-$150 in the past).

Edit:  It is worthy to note that if you're looking to play SFC games on an NTSC SNES...all you need is a simple pass-through cartridge (a common Game Genie works fine here).  That or you could cut the two thick gray plastic tabs on the inside of the SNES's cart slot.  Most PAL games that aren't Terranigma will play on an NTSC SNES with the Pro Action Replay 2 (I tihnk there's one other PAL game that requires a PAR 3 to be able to work...I could be wrong, though, as it's been a while since I've messed with imported SNES games and converters).
  • i once read an article that said you only needed to cut out the pins that push up the cart in order to press in a PAL cart? but i guess its not working 100% then?

in my experience convertors are absolute shit.. I had a fire FX convertor for NTSC to PAL but it only worked on 50% of the games (not on chrono trigger, star fox etc)

To fix this anoying problem i just bought a NTSC SNES.. and that works perfect offcourse image

if anyone is interested in reselling PAL SNESs in USA, i have 7 loose SNES PAL systems that are up for sale/trade.. shipping will be a bitch tho
  • I was trying to get Terranigma to play on a US SNES. Some PAL games will work without a convertor. But for Terranigma you either need a Pro Action Replay MK3 or add a couple switches to your SNES. I bought a PAL SNES thinking that would work. But even on a Commodore monitor I could only get it to play in black and white. I couldn't find the convertor for less than $80 so I modded a SNES. It isn't that hard to add a couple switches. If you decide to go the modding route I can show you where there are good step by step instructions.
  • damn, that is impressive. i do NOT intend to mod anything. the converter's price doesnt really matter, cuz i will buy it anyway, but i need to know what i am looking for first. does anyone have a picture of the version i need?
  • awesome, thanks shags... is that version you have cib?
  • that is not actually mine, just a pic I found
