security Bits

i noticed on ebay there are sever diffrent kind of bits out there to open games up

i bought a lot off craigslist and the guy gave me a bit he had but the shaft is too fat to fit into the hole on NES games, not to mention the bit looking too small to go over the screw. you could force it down there but its really really tightb

so i tried to match it up to my NES-2 and its to small for those

then i got a SNES cart out and it looks like the bit is the right size for the screws but once again the shaft is too fat to fit into the hole to even get onto the screw

the bit i have now in question has "NEX #6" stamped on it

any idea what it might go too and maybe someone could post a definitive list of what bits are needed for each type of cart/console out there?

Im going to custom paint one of the 2 SNES's i have comming from EBAy to match my white/silver NES and i will need the bit for that project. i dont have a SNES on hand at the moment to test my bit against

Thanks

  • You've got the mcm electronics security bits.

It's the correct size for NES because I have those myself, but the shaft is too fat as you mention.

Don't know about NES-2 because we don't have those in Europe.

I just put the bits in a drill and use sandpaper to grind down the shaft image
  • yeah i bought one of these off e-bay for a friend and the loser ships me one that doesnt fit into a nes game, when he clearly states they fit nes games in the auction. so now i need to find another one of these too..

    anyone here sell them?
  • i was at the tool store today and they had a 30 pc security bit set but none of them looked like they for a nintendo or carts

the insides were round and the outter shaft was hex'd...

too bad, the whole kit was only$5

do i need the 4.5 mm bit to open the systems? i think i already have the 3.5 bit for games

  • To open the SNES console you'll need a 4.5mm security bit.
  • My local hardware shop sells "Nintendo Security Bits", but the darn things aren't machined very well, and I've had a couple screws get totally chewed up in the process. Always make sure the teeth inside the bit are well-defined, because the little screws in the carts round out really easy.
  • ugghh now im even more scared to buy those cheapo ebay bits...

I sell security bits to Norwegian customers and if I where to be picky I would have to throw away maybe 10-20% of all the security bits I bought from MCM Electronics.
They are very cheap made (in Taiwan or something) image
  • If all else fails, take the end of a plastic BIC pen and heat it with a lighter until the plastic soft. Then stick it to the screw and mold it yourself. Remove and let harden, then you have your own security bit free of charge...
