SNES VS. FAMICON...........

As I close in on finishing my NES collection, I'm not quite sure what to move on to, SNES or Famicon.

I already know a fair amount about SNES just from Ebay and people talking about the games, price guides, etc... But Famicon I know very little about. But what I do know, is that I like the idea of what seems like a trillion games for the system, all that cool artwork on the carts and boxes, and you just don't hear alot about them.

Anyway, just wanted to see what people thought about the comparing the two. And if you do collect Famicon, any words of advice.Any feedback would be awsome! Thanks,

kevin

  • id go snes myself, actually i just kind of moved on from NES and started picking up snes games. mostly just for the play value. im not going for a full collection of either

famicom stuff is probably alot more rare and expensive then NES or SNES stuff in this country
  • I really like to collect fun Famicom exclusives. There's a lot of great games out there that most people have no idea even exist. Plus there are a variety of carts interesting carts and boxes that you likely won't find on the Super Famicom.

EDIT: I overlooked that you were talking about SNES and not Super Famicom. I would also go SNES, but you really should check out some of the great games that the Famicom has to offer.
  • I would go for SNES personally, because finding famicom in the wild is next to impossible. And a lot of the famicom games are on the NES, it's like buying the same games twice.
  • Definitely would recommend SNES. If you go Famicom, you won't finish for awhile, and will probably be buying more from international people, and bulk intntl. lots can be pretty expensive with shipping. Plus, there will be more SNES collectors both on the site and elsewhere who you can easily access, and if you're just starting, then there are always lots of bulk SNES lots. However, the artwork for Famicom is just insane image. Personally, I'd go SNES if I were you.

Or you could just buy Famicom from my store which is located in the US.  (https://www.famicomshop.com/)

We are able to offer some of the cheapest prices around because we ship the stuff from Japan in bulk to begin with.

I have a gigantic variety of games and systems.

I'd recommend going the Famicom route if you enjoy the NES.  You'll find that there are hundreds of great titles that the US NES never got.  You'll also find that FC/FDS versions of games that were released here have better sound and sometimes better graphics/effects.  Also keep in mind that so called PAL-exclusives like Hammerin Harry and Mr Gimmick aren't really PAL exclusives.  They were both released on the Famicom as Daiku no Gensan and Gimmick! (and cost a lot less).  Heck, Daiku no Gensan even got a sequel.

I am more than happy to answer any Famicom questions you may have as well.  Don't hesitate to PM me.

    Thanks,
    Carl

  • If you like NES games first and foremost, then famicom is the next natural progression... there are SOOOOOO many good games that never made out over here. Forget about the snes and it's fancy schmancy graphic rehashes and go for the gold - go for the family computer!!!
  • Your right. The Famicom has tons of great games that never made it here. I just wish they were all translated. image
  • Can't go wrong with either, but I would recommend going with Snes.
  • Snes + Super Famicom ;-)
  • I have no desire for any of the international stuff at this point, SNES is the next logical progression IMO. I mean face it, 90% of us began collecting for one reason... to relive our youth. I don't know how many people on these boards actually had a Famicom growing up...

Plus SNES is a must have if you like RPGs. Famicom could be the next stepping stone if you are truly die-hard NES guy, but if you just have an appreciation for "Nintendo" itself, then you might as well go through their generations...

If that were the case, why not go with what started it all?  There are hundreds of JP exclusives that require zero knowledge of Japanese.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.  I'm glad we got Super Mario 2 Japanese over here packaged on SNES All-Stars, so I'm sure they have good games.  My childhood memories begin at the NES though and I have no desire for anything prior to that (Atari, Famicom, etc.).

I think that when many of us were young, we didn't even know what Famicom was, but as long as you knew what NES was, you probably knew what SNES was, so if it's a childhood reliving sort of thing, then you should go SNES.

  • Thanks for the input guys!!! You all are bringing up really good points.

Also it's nice to see a die hard Famicon collector/seller out there. Thanks Carl!
  • If I had to choose one or the other I'd say SNES, but what I would recommend (if you can do it) is to collect CASUALLY for both systems. Get an SNES (or two depending on how you feel about the next step), then break off the two plastic tabs inside the cart slot so it can play Japanese Super Famicom games. Get yourself a good Famicom and Famicom Disc System. Which one? This is a VERY important decision. If you have a tv that you can change to channels between 90 to 99, then I'd say get the original Famicom & an FDS. It's cheaper and it has that classic look to it. If not, then a Twin Fami is the way to go. It has a built-in cart AND disc system, just make sure you get the version of this that has a built-in microphone in its second controller the way the original Fami does. Neither the AV Fami nor the second version of the Twin Fami has that, and it's essential for enjoying some features not found in the NA versions of games (like killing Pols Voice in Zelda, haggling down the shop keepers in Kid Icarus, etc) and of course karaoke in a game that never made it over here, Takeshi no Chousenjou. After that, just pick up some games that sound interesting to you. I can give you a ton of recommendations for SNES/SFC games that are both cheap and super fun. I just got into Fami/FDS collecting tho so prolly can't help too much there. It's great to play the FDS version of some NES classics like Metroid and the Zeldas (and the first two Castlevanias, and the first two Super Mario Bros, and Doki Doki Panic that we got as SMB 2, etc). So yeah, I think you should go w/ both (or all three depending on how you look at the FDS) and just buy the cheap stuff at first.
