Can a NES get dirty from sitting around?

I just received a "new" NES I ordered from eBay. The controllers and cords that came in it are definitely new. The console itself looks dirty though. I stuck a Naki cleaner in it and it came out pretty dirty too. The guy said it's been sitting in a cloest for years and has never been used; which the accessories show.

Is it possible for a new to be dirty, including the 72-pin connector, from just sitting in it's box for years?

  • I would assume so. If the console was kept out in the open, even in a box, and the environment was dusty I would think it could get dirty...or the seller's lying.
  • Odd. Could have been used a few times 25 years ago and then boxed up. People often think something is "new" but they really used it a little at the beginning. Hard to imagine it could get that dirty with the front lid closed and never being touched. Then again, if the console is dirty on the outside, maybe it was stored in a garage or something.

I'd ask the seller if they know why it's dirty, don't be accusatory just see if they know?
  • I asked and he said it was in his attic the whole time. There are some scratches on the console and even a small crack. The weird thing is the controllers and everything is in perfect condition, including Super Mario Bros. 3, still boxed up. Seems like the console may have been swapped out at some time, but who knows.
  • I should also mention that the controllers and cords are still bagged and in their original twist ties from factory.
  • Yeah the console can get dirty just sitting around, especially if it sat in a smoker's house.
  • still bagged eh? i wouldnt open them. btw yes a console can get dirty over time if sitting in a loosely packaged box. the pin might have been tarnished especially if it came out of a humid environment even a hot dry envoroment like the attic will mske the pin tarnish and get dirty over time.
  • Im going to call a spade a spade he definitely sold you a used system, maybe it wasnt used by him and he had no idea but cracked console and dirty, that just isnt new in my book.
  • Cracked and scratches would indicate signs of use. If it was just dirty and a good cleaning showed no cracks or scratches I'd say you got lucky as it's getting more and more difficult to find a NES without any scratches these days.
  • I sent the guy pictures and he said said it went into his attic from the store and the box was never even opened. His only thought was someone possibly returned a used console back to the store, and he bought that one. It's being shipped back today... Thanks everyone.

This is frustrating. This is the 3rd "new" console I've bought that hasn't been new and I've had to return.
  • A well maintained and cleaned used NES works just as well as buying a 'new' CIB system and is alot cheaper. Just saying...
  • I'll just add in you can buy new OEM nes controllers on ebay for about 30$. Might've been a swap job, but possibly not by the seller if it was a return long ago.
  • Thanks everyone. Got a 4th one that came in perfect condition, as advertised.
  • True, but how do you know it's a well maintained and cleaned system? You have to rely on the word of the seller, which I've found isn't worth that much. I'll be able to keep mine well cleaned and maintained now.
