SNES help

My Super nintendo console has been doing this thing in many different games (examples include Megaman X1, X2, and X3, Final fantasy 2 and 3, Illusion of Gaia, yoshis island, and more that I cant think of).

Everytime I go to like an item menu or weapon select menu through either the pause button or menu button, and come back from to the main screen, the colours are all wierd, as if it wasn't loaded properly or something. Some games have these lines going from the top of the screen to the bottom. once this has happened, it stays until usually a scenery change (like entering a house) but comes back once the item select, or characther stats menu is selected, and then put away again.

Anyone know what this could be attributed to?

Thanks all!

I don't THINK so, but I'll check when I get a minute to. As far as cords and such, I am using AV connectors instead of the coaxial connector to work better with my setup.  Could that be it too?

Ok. AV would only be an issue if your AV is going out.

Probably not it, but take an old toothbrush dipped in isoprpyl and scub your SNES console pins a bit.

Alright, will do. It has been a little bit since getting a good cleaning. Thanks for the tips. I'll keep you updated if any of these are the problems.

  • Sounds like bad VRAM to me if its intermittent
  • If the cleaning doesn't help it, it could be faulty video ram. I've seen that cause issues like that.
  • I had one SNES system kick the bucket that way. Most games worked fine, but some games like DKC, Super Metroid or Tales of Phantasia would have messed up graphics after exiting a menu. Most likely the VRAM, as already pointed out. The worst part is that it will get worse, at least in my case it did... Best thing to do, sadly, is just buy another one.
  • Shame I'm not in Canada as I've got something like 5 working snes mainboards here but not that number of good shells.
  • post a screen shot of it or video on youtube. so i can verify what it might be. it could be the vram but it also could be a few other things. with my experience ive had a snes and n64 with video issues. the n64 had issue with bright obbects and would screw up the signal on the tv. wile the snes ive had an issue with the screen flickering between black and white and color.

both were fixed by cleanng the n64 av multi out with a q tip and windex. wile the snes i had to clean a pot with electronic cleaner on the Mobo to fix the issue.

so simply put try cleaning your system first if it still isnt working right then its most likely a ram issue. i have a test cart that can tell me what part of the console is not working right so if i was there i could find out exactly whats wrong
  • I don't think it's an issue with the connections if it only happens after you exit a sub-screen. Definitely sounds like a MOBO issue on the SNES.
